August 28, 200917 yr Nice simple piece using some older R&B styles (very early 1990's a good deal of it). A little repetitive for my tastes though I like the synth line played against the opening material near the very end - would have loved to hear more. Something like the ending of this old Eno song from 1977: Also, you do something but to a far lesser degree that I would love to hear you play around with more - the claps. You had some nice offbeats. Now Eno here stays close to a groove throughout but the variation of the timbres and juxtapositions keep it interesting - plus the end is a wonderful surprise that srtill maintains the propulsice motoric rush of the song.
August 28, 200917 yr I really wanted to like this because there are some really interesting sonic elements, but ... that clap sound really killed it, especially on the repeats. One clap might be okay but it needs more sounds for the counter-rhythms (which I'd guess the repetitive claps are trying to achieve). There's also some kind of weird volume thing which, if I had to guess, is being achieved through an LFO. To me, it's distracting, it almost sounds like an accident or a problem in the mix -- it took me a few listens to realize that it was done on purpose. Having said this, I dig the feel of the piece. It evokes a kind of nostalgia or longing. I can't stress enough how strongly I feel about the clap repetition. Normally, I try to get into the composer's shoes and put my feelings aside, but they really must go. It's just killing the piece. If they must stay (for your vision), then they need a lot more sculpting and development.
