Impromptu No. 3 in B-flat Minor, "Dissociation"

Featured Replies

"Dissociation is an unexpected partial or complete disruption of the normal integration of a persons conscious or psychological functioning that cannot be easily explained by the person. Dissociation is a mental process that severs a connection to a person's thoughts, memories, feelings, actions, or sense of identity."

I tried my best to convey the idea of dissociation as I experience it, severed connections, emotional instability, problems with overall functioning, and the list goes on.

I've been working hard to try and compose using different techniques, chords, less form, and more originality.

Thanks for your ears and I hope you enjoy.

wow, I enjoyed this piece. Has many good moments. I really like the overall sadness.

There are a few things I would have done differently. See if this helps:

There are a bit to many changes but maybe this is the way you translated the idea of dissociation in the themes.

The "agitato furiose (MM140) and the mesto (MM50) are in almost the same tempo if you rewrite the Mesto to a 3/4 and the sixtuplets made to eights, and the quarter to a dotted halve. Or the other way around.

Maybe you could fix the right hand being a bit smaller than the left?

You've got the idea right about the changes in the piece, illustrating constant change, detachment, incomplete memories/ideas, etc.

The tempi used served purposes as well. Mesto molto (It. Very sad) at 50 bmp is a trudging fall into depression, loss of consciousness, or the slow arrival of a part of yourself that feels unacceptable. I see the idea of using 3/4 and tuples of eight. I think thought about that at one point but decided to go with common time.

Thanks again!

There are some parts where the right hand stretches to an interval that isn't possible. If a gliss or bracket isn't written, I say up to the performer how to interpret.

I meant the upper stave is smaller, than the lower; the noteheads are smaller too. This is the case from ms 1-45

Great composition! I really enjoyed listening! I will need to come back to this one...it's great!

hi,

wow,

i loved the direction and movement in this piece and can completely see how it related to the stuff that you talked about at the top. it was sad, and melacollly, dramatic and difficult (i don't mean physically, i mean the emotion).

loved the idea of the recurring themes.

the ending was sublime, i just question the use of that run in bar 90 (?) (you know the one!), i felt that it was unnecessary and up untill then beautiful, just beautiful.

Thanks for the listen and reply. I appreciate the compliment on this work as I put a lot of effort to convey some personal experiences. I've always been able, but I also wanted to step outside of my classical zone and really compose something original.

About 90:

I wanted a dramatic end with a descending Bb harmonic minor scale to (V)F. I used it sparingly and really tried to avoid that cadence several times in the piece. However, I needed the listeners attention so that the main theme (Bbm) and the subsequent ending in major (representing hope) was acknowledgeable.

I really liked the individual themes that occurred throughout this piece, but I didn't like how they kept recurring identically at various points. It seems to me like you wrote about half of this (or less) and then copied and pasted some parts around to make it longer. I would suggest expanding and developing the subsequent reappearance of certain themes. You did this somewhat in a few places, but I would love to see more of it. Personally I would take a theme, expand it, maybe repeat it and then move on to the next instead of constantly jumping back to previous motives, but thats just me and you can do whatever you want in your music. Once again, though, I did enjoy the sound of what you have very much. Good job!

I'm glad you enjoyed what you heard. Again, to reiterate, the point of the piece is to illustrate what a dissociative mind is like. One motive changes abruptly to another, however perhaps later the thought is completed or slightly expanded on, nevertheless the madness continues. I listen to it now and still hear different variations on parts but I'm happy with where it's at right now. Thanks for you honest feedback and listening.

Kudos! I really enjoyed this piece. You did a very good job in realising your ideals in its composition. Any plans for a performance of this work?

I really liked this! The final cadence was the only thing that made me go . The theme based on thirds reminded me of the Dies Irae. I think it would be also worth it to take a few minutes to learn how to get the best out of your sound samples too.

I really enjoyed it alot. Very nice harmonies and good melodies/themes. Nice.
