My first piano composition

Featured Replies

This is the closest thing I have to any complete-sounding composition. It's short. and not fully developed. To tell you the truth, I'm not very fond of it. I liked certain parts of it like the beginning (which was the first idea I started with), but it doesn't sound that interesting, I feel, and it tends to be repetitive but I don't know how to fix that. Please help me out on this. I don't know what I'm doing. The recording is a bit off on parts. I only put this together in a few hours because I wouldn't have the opportunity to record it later.

Thanks

P.S. It seems like most of you who compose do it somewhat intuitively or just have a natural knack for composing. Is there any hope for me to get to that level? or is it a gift that you either have or don't?

I don't know what I'm doing.

It sounds to me like you do. :)

Really, this was good. I like it. It wasn't repetitive at all. You had chord progressions, different musical phrases, pitch changes, pauses, rhytmic changes....let me know when I get to the repetition part. :)

So, be more confident. Have faith in yourself. This was great. ^_^

There's nothing in this world that we either "have or don't have". There's only things that we either getor don't get (get as in work for). Anyone can compose if you just work at it. And, from listening to this piece, you certainly can. Without even knowing it, you, yourself, just "intuitively" and "naturally" composed.

See?

To a certain extent, making music is an intuitive and natural process. It's all around us. It's hard to avoid. The sound of it and the nature of it gets imprinted into us to the point where we can recognize and regurgitate it. Of course, after intuition and nature comes skill, but skill is something anyone can build up.

That's all I'll say. Hope I made you feel more confident. ^_^

thanks a lot!

some of the chord progressions in the transitions kind of bothered me, and to me they sounded like they were too predictable, but maybe that's just me growing tired of hearing it over and over.

any idea on how i might improve this or lengthen it? or is the length fine as it ?

The opening, I felt, was extremely well done. Very imaginitive and evocative. You then go back to some of these opening ideas later. However, I felt the bit in the middle with the octaves in the left hand was quite weak, because you used sparser and less rich harmonies than the opening.

I think the length is fine (nice ending by the way). All you need to do is sort out the bits with the left hand octaves.

The opening was pretty nice (like the others said), it opened to many ideas. It smoothly developed, I thought. The melody was pretty nice throughout. The ending was so sweet too...awwww.. :)

Nice work!

My Word, this song is one of the best I've heard so far on this forum...Hoping to hear more. It is really good, you've added dynamics, texture, and focused on the main melody. I'm telling you its pretty good.

Thanks, everyone. =]

how much time has elapsed before the part you're talking about? I have two parts in mind, i just want to make sure.

While not the sort of music I myself like ot listen to, it is quite excellently done for its genre. Very evocative and moody without being gushy and gaudy. I think it balances well and makes for some good relaxing mood music.

This is a nice piece. It reminds me of George Winston, only I think it is a lot better than George Winston.

It seems to me you're doing things intuitively. Try using more stray notes in your playing (tones not in the scale you're playing in), maybe changing key suddenly. Who knows where it might take you!

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try to play around and see what I can get.

I've been listening to some compositions that don't seem bound to any one key and decided to try that myself. I played around for a couple hours to see what I could get. Naturally, it came out robotic sounding...which made me even more interested in seeing what I could do. I started it in Finale Notepad, so unfortunately i don't have any midi file to put up. Here's what I have in Finale. It's just a start.

oh, and the title needs some work, heh..

EDIT: Oops. I guess I have no more space =/.

what version of Finale do you have? I have finale 2004...it can't open the file  should I download the notepad demo?

I have finale notepad 2005...i would have assumed that any version of finale would be able to open it.

I don't know =/

I thought the robot piece was well put together. It reminded me of Scott Joplin, especially if you would have syncopated the right hand part. Overall, great start cant wait to hear more, especially after that cool cliffhanger of a scale! :)
