Soliloquy for Solo Violin

Featured Replies

This something I wrote in a short period of time so that it could be played with relative ease in a upcoming concert. I tried to utilize the open strings of the violin to make it more playable but also to bring out a specific color. Also, I attempted to compose this work that it would not be boring to the audience and would cause excitement.

Hopefully you enjoy.

Good effort, fegane. You build the tension and maintain interest by gradually introducing more complex rhythms through the first page, and by not crowding the music with too much material. Indeed you generally spend a good amount of time exploring a phrase before moving on. The contrast between lively and thoughtful sections was also effective and suited the title of the piece well. I would have liked for this piece to build to a more definite climax though; it rather shied away from hitting the very top at the start of the third page even though the material was quite intense, and this made the ending feel a little disappointing. Perhaps a fortissimo statement of the opening theme with chords on the important notes would be a good way to do this, but this is purely my suggestion. I presume the left-hand pizzicati can be played at the speed prescribed on the instrument - you seem to have positioned them in order that the player can resume bowing after a conventional pizz. passage. I also think that some more dynamic and expressive markings would benefit the piece; or, alternatively, indicate that the player should add these at the their discretion by writing something like 'freely' or 'tempo rubato' at the head of the score. I just think this music is better not in a strict tempo, and it's not as if there are several players who must keep together.

Thanks Siwi I will truly take those things you suggested into account. And the pizz is very easily playable just to let you know. Also I use the tempo markings very roughly I just want them near that tempo and varie it around that. But again thankyou so much!
