Conceptual Sketch #1

Featured Replies

i like this one. the rush in concrete sounds conrasting piano drones at start then syncing, though i am not so convinced with the big cluster in first part of the piece. maybe conrete sounds a bit too loud at moments, but i guess it's just a recording issue. overall, i like the tempo, the unfolding/enfolding idea and textures.

A conceptual sketch for an electronic piece, using only 2 concrete items and a piano.

Conceptual Sketch #1

What items did you use? I hear a set of keys and I'm not sure about the other. I enjoyed the emerging keyboard sounds at 2:47, but they felt overpowered by the processed crinkling/jingling sounds.

Would be veeeery interesting to see the score of piano part (if you created it)

The strings at 2:47 ? is piano too ? sound a bit like cymbalon,

Ah I get a funny feeling from the concrete sounds. Really well recorded. I know nothing about what is "good" in this genre but I can say I enjoyed listening.

The sounds at the beginning were pretty creative.

I don't know what else to say other than I liked the creativity of this. Kept my interest the entire time.

I feel like I'm listening to the soundtrack of a zombie's existential crisis.

Which is to say, I like it a lot.

Thanks for the comments guys. The piece itself is inspired from Concrete PH by Xenakis. I wanted to do something similar, very simple rhythmic device from a concrete object, but expand it an attempt to make it work in a longer setting. Concrete PH is about 2:00 mins long and I don't think it could have been any longer; however, I loved the sound so I wanted to try to make something similar, but longer. Hence I used to concrete objects and a piano. The reason some of the piano sounds weird is because all of it is pizzicato'd inside of the piano. I don't hit a single key, rather I play it all on the piano. It gives sort of a resonant unkindling effect, if you will, and felt it would be appropriate for the type of sound I was trying to do.

Nice one, Morgri. I enjoyed the constant sound of the objects though I felt it could be more variated in terms of intensity. I'll have to agree with Pliorius regarding the cluster. I think that it is heard a bit too early and since it also marks the transition from the first section of the piece to the middle one I believe it would be better if you explored some more the ideas presented in the first section. Perhaps it would be better if the second section built up in intensity leading to the climax of the piece with the cluster. You could also plan it that way so as the climax would fall on the golden section of the piece. It would be an interesting conceptual antithesis of the chaotic versus the harmoniously structured.

So, very nice sounds and atmosphere on the whole! :)

Hey...

This is a great texture, cool atmosphere.

How much was "composed" ... sounds like you'd have some good improvisatory chops... ;)

Well, it is all notated, but the improvisatory elements (like going up the strings on the piano) are marked by certain symbols and such. I'll post the sheet music soon.

It's got quite an unsettling atmosphere. I think the concrete sounds are a bit overpowering in the second section, when the keyboard sounds are coming in. I think it's structured well, and I disagree about the cluster being heard too early, because the cluster which transitions into the second second is distinctly different. It feels like preperation, so the sections link together quite nicely. It's a very good piece!

I like this very much, very nice textures that you get in this piece.

In curiosity, what did you use to get pitch material for this piece?

Updated: I uploaded the score for all who are curious.

I heard more piano of what I saw in the score..

Still, very enigmatic music
