Flute Fantasy

1. Techniques used

I don't know any techniques, so I doubt I used any.

2. How long it took to compose the piece

This took an hour or two on piano, and an hour or so on Finale Notepad.

3. Structure of your piece

It's just a theme that goes into different variations in different keys. You can probably identify a form better than I can.

4. Obstacles when composing

Not knowing what I'm doing. And the fact that Notepad only seems to let me write two pages of music. There was a better ending in mind, but I had to totally scrap the unaccompanied E and C# whole note and jam the piano chords into the last two beats of the unison A.

5. Summary of overall piece

I just sat down one day and decided to write something less brooding than my typical little, uh, compositions, I suppose. Really, it's just a theme I wrote while thinking about a girl.

I suppose it might be a flautist's fantasy to be able to play two notes at the same time.

A nice simple poppy melody, a very simple harmony, and no texture in the piano accompanyment - Just whole notes and half notes. There's nothing wrong with this peice. On the other hand, there is nothing memorable about it. You could keep the melody, and start to re-write the piano part and try to put some texture and motion into it. Not a LOT!! Most people would overdo this. Don't fill up the piano part with a constant stream of quarter or eighth notes. You don't want to detract from the melody.

One more suggestion. - In measure 23 move that harmony part (that a single flute player can't play in the first place) and move it into the piano part.

Well, I never said it was for a single flute player. Your saying that just reminded me; I began writing it as a vocal duet, then I changed it later on. But as a flute solo, yeah, that would be quite fantastic.

I like the idea of re-writing the piano part to be more of an accompaniment than just chords. I don't really play piano myself, so all I could do on the piano was bang out chords and a melody. But on Finale it would be possible. Thanks.

I agree with leightwing for the most part. I think adding more piano movement (dare I say fills?) would help a lot. I would do some subtle melody-echoing in the piano to make it kinda sound like its in a round, but only the second time through the phrase.

I generally like the melody. The only thing I didn't like about it was it seemed a little repetitive. That's not to say that I could do a better job cause I don't think I could, but that's just the impression that I get. Overall, not bad, but it could use some refinement.

Yeah, I'm looking at fills and filler-type stuff to make it more interesting. About the repetition; I'm thinking a B section between the second and third repetitions, just to give the listener a little break. Ooh; maybe I can make it a full flute duet by having the B section be played along with the final A section. It would just have to fit so as not to detract from the melody. What do you think?
