January 30, 201016 yr ohk, so this is a piece i wrote during the holidays.....it is honestly a piece that needs tp be played by an orchestra, because my program "sibelius" and the ram on my computer can not handle too many instruments playing at the smae time...so if it was to be recorded i would bulk it up! please coment i need all the help i can get! January 30, 201016 yr Hi thanks for sharing this piece. I always am excited when someone posts into the orchestral forum. But this sounded like pop song. I that was your intention it is fine, but since you labeled it "classical period" I think it needs work. Therefore thanks for sharing *orchestration* So some things in the score are strange measured by classical standards. The usual string division is 2 violin parts, one viola section, one staff for the celli, and one CB. The violins can be divided (as you did in 4 parts) but all the time is rare, and I think in this case not so effective. Division in the basses is rare too, often created a muddy sound you don't want. For the woodwinds it is usual to define how many of them need to be playing. Same applies for brass. Besides several balance issues I think you have something you imagine and try to translate to the orchestra, which is really good. But I would suggest you take a look in the orchestration masterclass on the forum. There is a lot I think would be helpful for you. *harmony* You use the progression I-VII-VI-V often. The beginning is full of it. It is a non-classical progression but one often occurs in popular of film music. Not a bad thing per se, but if you want your piece to be considered to be classical this is a no-no. Something similar applies for the rhytms you use. All a bit too poppy. Around 4:30 is a facinating piece. There is this progression translated a fourth lower, and that creates a modal feel (mixolydian) The final cadence (II-V) feels like the end, but isn't because of the mode. I leave it here. I hope this helps, and if I am wrong about your intentions (to write a classical piece) you can easily disregard this post keep up!
January 30, 201016 yr I have to say I'm very angry with this chord sequence. You heard it in billions of pop songs. I think it's reached a peak with Muse's Citizen Erased. And I don't want to hear it any more. Sorry.
January 30, 201016 yr Author I no were u r coming from with the whole pop feel and what not, but my aim is to try and created a score, more indepth than the modern music u get, still classical (or what i like to call classical) but something my friends would like to listen to. And i honestly dont think there is a genre 4 it. Thank u for all the advice, i need as much as i can get i will definatly muck around with that I-VII-VI-V progression and see how i go. thanks alot.
January 31, 201016 yr There is a HUGE genre for this type of music... it's prog rock.. look into it - some good stuff! Anyways, I agree pretty much with the technical orchestration issues mentioned above by jrcramer. Aside from that, I think you have some nice ideas - there just not really classical in nature. Perhaps we could move this thread to another upload forum where you will receive the type of feedback that would be more geared to what you have here. Would you be ok with that?
