Aubrey's Lullaby

This is your first ever composition, or first ever work for string orchestra? It's very nice and catchy either way, even if it is predictable. Are you thinking of this as a concert piece or a film/game work? Thanks for posting!

First composition ever, so i guess its a first for an orchestration as well. it is more of a concert piece but i wrote it to be able to adapt to a movie. right now its pretty much whatever :)

I found it too popular to be a concert piece. There is no harmonic development. The structure of the piece is, based on its texture an a-b-a, but looking at the harmonies its just a single theme. I think there is in these areas a lot to improve on.

I hope you don't find this to harsg, or at least helpful. When you would provide a score, people could give more detailed comments.

keep up!

what do you mean by popular??? no not to harsh, thanks for the advice i'll work on it.

with popular I meant the harmonic progression I-VI-III, also from III to IV is a bit cheesy.

Being iterative is also a feature common in popular music. Please do not mistake this with minimal music ;)

This is good for your first composition and it looks like you have a ton of potential. However I going to have to agree with jrcramer a little here. The piece sounds more like popular music, which isnt a bad thing if that is what you are going for, but even then it still needs work.

To me this sounds like the strings that go to the background of some alternative rock band or even rap music, (something like Linkin Park)

This is due to the repetitiveness of the bass line and same four chords ( i-VI-III-V) used through out, a feature indicative of popular alternative rock music. I think it would be in your best interest if you were to add interest by using other chords then those four chords all the time. Also a change in rhythm would also be in your best interest.

Other then that, good job on your first piece, I hope to hear more from you.

Not that it is necessarily a bad thing :-) Some make millions o' bucks doing exactly what you just did (*cough* Zimmer *cough*). The only difference: they add Storm Drums 2 to it, and use thousands worth of libraries and hundred of thousands worth of computers, and get insane publicity from people like Spielberg McTiernan and others. If this is where you want to go, this is a step in the right direction
