Hurricane Abigale

Featured Replies

Hi YC!

This is a live performance of my piece, "Hurricane Abigale". I have the first version posted, and I would like to add the score. However, I do not know how to upload videos, so here is the YouTube link. (There are two parts)

Thanks, please comment!

Heckel

Really ? Lucky you, ... actually I think you're so lucky that could be bad for you....

that doesn't mean I don't wish you sincere congratulations.

very good piece and well done for getting it performed well done.

So, what's this doing in the discussion forum again?

The piece sounds like it was written by a 10 year old.

Oh wait, it was.

Jealous much?

Though to me it'd be interesting to see what he writes in ten years.

It most certainly will be interesting and I wish him all the best of luck in the future.

And no, I'm not jealous. I already had my "moment" of orchestral performance with the NYPhil.

There were not any in there that I remember....

Bad? In what way?

After 5 attempts spread out through the week, I have yet been able to listen to it all. I keep getting distracted or sleepy. Am I alone in this?

On a related note, I'll tell you what I told Nico when he first joined. You're doing well for a kid your age, stay focused, don't let it go to your head, and be a normal person and you'll have the chance to go far.

Justin,

Why did you post that? It'd be really nice if, next time, you would refrain from bringing such negativity around here. It's not helpful. It serves only to make you look like a petty, jealous buffon. Heckel accomplished something great - a completed piece, one which warranted a performence by a serious professional orchestra. Yes, he's young. We all know that - him likely most of all. Quit getting so defensive all the time, it makes you come across as amateurish and immature .

I doubt Heckel went out of his way to try attack any of your performances... have some respect.

Thanks,

Robin

I guess they'll play anything these days, eh?

But anyway I still don't think this is the right forum for this thread. [Fix'd it for you. rj ]

Considering the shameful behavior of the audience in the premiere of "Sacre du Printemps" and "Desert" ... having a non succesful premiere doesn't mean the piece is for sure bad, BUT in this case your piece is not "too good for be understood", so.....

You just feel very happy for having such a great oportunity, ... your music ? ... you'll write better as you continue composing.

I'm not jealous about the music but I am about having the chance a nice orchestra plays your music, we are many of us wating to have that chance, ... and some cases the chance never comes, Prokofiev for instance (and that's no an unknown guy) never had the chance to listen and see the stage of his greater opera "The Fiery Angel" ... he made a sort of reduccion for orchestra (Symphony No.3) but at that time, with the war, there were many men fighting on the lines (including musicians) and the symphony were performed in a poor premiere.

A few years after he died the opera was premiered, .... isn't it a trully sad story ?... of course, and to add more tragedy, he died the same day Stalin did, and everyone "had" to be on Stalin funeral (pretending the "great lost") and prokofiev was left several hours alone, ...

that's the price a composer has to pay for a permanent place on the history of music, I won't talk about myself very much, but I tell you, .. I'm already paying...

nevermind the lack of hurrays ... perhaps the audience was full of "Tokkes" grin.gif .... (sure, that was it)

wasn't it Justin ? tongueanti.gif

EDIT:

Next time you invite Angela and all her female friend to the premiere and you'll have a loud hurray

Graham,

I hope you don't let anyone's negativity get to you. It's awesome that you got roughly 10 minutes of music in front of a professional orchestra (and got a great video to boot). Is that your father conducting? I think some harmonies sound a bit thin, especially in the strings, but you have some good ideas. Have you studied many scores? In this piece it seems like you're going for a Stravinsky-like transparency rather than a lush Ravel orchestration, but a study of orchestral scores of either composer might give you some ideas for a fuller-bodied sound.

Is true, the video is very good too, at least not one of those celphone videos with 32Kbps audio ...

and the Negativity, that was Justin only

Absolutely wonderful! I regret not being able to come over and see it; that would have been wonderful to be apart of. Best of luck to you in your coming compositional ventures!

Well well it seems as if everyone is a tad wee bit mad at Justin?

Don't get mad at him guys... it's fine.

I'll take a critical comment.

Ahh... well, this is my favorite piece I've heard from you so far. VERY cool to hear it played by a live orchestra! Ok... so first thing I must say is, piano AND synth in the same piece? You just got MAJOR cool points for that! lol I LOVE the synth choir you've got going there. You have a LOT of good ideas here. My favorite part is the eye, and then when the eye wall hits and everything becomes chaotic again. You captured that image brilliantly!

Ok, now... all that being said, it comes time for the helpful advice (aka criticisms XD)

You've gotten a lot better about this, but... I'm gonna say the same thing I always say to you. :P WAY too much repetition of motifs. It's like, the same exact motif over and over and over and over and over and over again with very little to no variety in them at all, and it continues that way for minutes on end. Tweak your repetitions more, change the chords behind the repeated motifs slightly every now and then. Even little changes like that can make a HUGE difference, and make the piece much less repetitive.

Keep it up! You're doing great! :D
