Re-naming instruments at start of score in Sibelius.

Featured Replies

I want to have 2 pairs of horns in F on two separate staves. Using the House Style dialogue box to edit "Horn in F", I can only get either "Horns 1 & 2 in F" on both staves or "Horns 3 & 4 in F" on both staves. Of course, I really want "Horns 1 & 2 in F" on the upper one and "Horns 3 & 4 in F" on the lower one. Could someone please let me know how this can be done.

To change the name of any staff, double click on the name at the biginning of the score to edit..

You ask for a new sheet (blank) and click "change Instruments" then "choose from" - "family" - "instruments" the "Horn in F"..

Now you can add two staves, and you will be able to change the name for staff one "Horns 1 & 2" and the second staff "Horns 3 & 4" but you won't be able to use the 4 horns in a single staff (if necessary).. (blue)

Or Add one staff only, then select it (in "Staves in Score") and click "Extra staff" (Above or Below) this will create 2 staves like in the 2nd example see the pic..

I prefer the 2nd one because I can use several convinations.. (Red)

I would not recommend using the second convention because its very confusing to read for the conductor. Stick with the first one. Keep the numbers consistent throughout the score.

By the way, I have seen more scores using the pairs as 1&2 , 3&4, (5&6, 7&8) than 1&3 , 2&4...

Including Mahler, Strauss, Scriabin, Sibelius uuu ..many, and by Dover, Schirmer etc...

Is there any true reason to start writing on my scores those 1&3 2&4 ?

Many thanks, gentlemen, for your kind replies. However, I'm afraid I couldn't understand how to get either method to work. Sorry I'm so thick!

Anyhow, I've now managed to work out my own way of achieving the desired result. Firstly, I deleted one of the 2 "Horn in F" staves and edited the remaining one under House Style to read "Horns 1 & 2 in F" I then went to Create, instrument and from "all instruments" selected "Horn in F(bass clef)" On adding this to the score I just had to edit its name to "Horns 3 & 4 in F", using the same procedure as before. Finally,I went to Create, Clef to substitute a treble clef and, BINGO it worked! :)

Being new to Sibelius after so many years of easy-to-use Noteworthy,I feel rather like a novice chess player attempting to pit his skills against a grand master!

Cheers,

John.

I saw a -1 on his post ^_^ come one, if he can't figure it out how to change the name that's doesn't mean you have to give negative points on his reputation ... be better persons... (I clicked +1 to reset)

J.H White, to change the name you don't need to go to house style, just in the first page of your score, you double click any instrument name to edit, .. also in the subsequent pages you do the same to edit the short name (like Hn. in F), (you only have to change the short name in one page and will be changed in all pages)

Double click in the name,

Many thanks for that tip Daniel, it makes life so much easier for me. It's great to have someone like you on this forum; I'm sure that easy method of changing instrument names isn't mentioned in the Sibelius 6 Reference Book.

Cheers,

John.

It is actually, probably under "instruments".
