Symphony in A Major, Movement 2

Featured Replies

Well. i finished writing movement 2 of my symphony in A. if you don't remember the first movement, it's here www.aeskape.com/mvt1.mp3

www.aeskape.com/mvt2.mp3 is the second movement.

there's this one part in the middle where several instruments clash horribly, and i'm not sure why. but yeah. any feedback at all would be useful. (i'm well aware of any/all balance issues. especially in the low brass.

i'll post the score of all four movements when i complete them all. that'll be around july/august.

I couldn't hear a clash.

It's a nice, sustained movement and the only issue is that at 3min 23sec it comes to a cadence and halts where a bridge to the next subject might have helped.

Sight of the score would be useful as you have a few tuttis (like at 3 mins 9s) and though the balance sounded ok on midi, you may have to make changes for an orchestra, like doublings and ensuring the brass doesn't swamp everything. Around 2m 50, the scoring seemed to get a little bottom heavy which seemed out of keeping with the rest. Was this the clash you meant?

Hey, thanks for the listen! I'll respond to your points in chronological order:

2:50 - I agree...I think my bass clarinet sound is responsible for that...it's really grating >_> But the melody is supposed to be carried by staccato notes in the bass at that point...bass clarinets, among others have sustained harmony notes, which came out much too loud. But it wasn't the clash I personally heard, which is at 5:25.

3:23 - On the recapitulation, I bridged those two themes together; on a relisten and re-examination, I see what you mean. The sound just kinda..halts. =] Thanks for the tip.

Your Op. 3 is the second movement of a symphony, so you started your first symphony after your first opus?!

The lead-up at 1:30 finishes very nicely! Oh my, I love the melody starting at around 1:58. It leads up to 2:53 well! As for 3:23, I kinda like the halt, but maybe its a bit too much of a jump from that fff to the pp. :) If there was a clash, it would have to be at 3:26. And we're back to that beautiful line at 5:50ish! If you want a bit of negativity (to balance things out =)): I personally didn't like the ending. It was too sudden for me.

Great job!
