May 2, 201016 yr Hi all, I've always wanted to write the kind of classic/cliché love theme, so here it is: We have big strings (EWQL) and the piano is recorded by myself. I'm a bit proud of that actually, as my piano skills are somewhat limited. Unfortunately you hear that in the recording in some places... Also the piano has a rather "hard sound" and is a bit detuned. If anyone wants to hear, I can also upload a EWQL Steinway B version of the piano... There's also a score, for those who are interested. May 2, 201016 yr Very nice track Oliver. Is it supposed to be an unhappy love or something like that? I was expecting more of a cheerful and happy mood when I was reading the description. It gets better after 3:00 tho' till then it was really like bitter-sweet but thats cool also. The ending sounds kind of hopeless, so this is really and emotional roller-coaster which is a good thing in some situations, and I find it hard to change the moods like this, so good job on that. The quality itself could be better, the strings sound cool, piano is a little dry but not too bad. What did you use to record it? As far as the writing itself goes it's pretty legit, there are some minor glitches that I don't really like, like the bit where the strings just abruptly stop at 1:05 or something like that. You could just fade them out gradually. All in all, a good piece that could easily find its way in some movie if you work on the sound quality a bit more.

May 3, 201016 yr It certainly is cliche with that chord sequence at the start ;) Perfectly done there though, really set the tone. I don't like the entrance of the violin at 0:43...far too abrupt for my liking. Maybe set them one octave lower and slowly move them up?? The strings at 1:25 sound synthy as well. What patch did you use?? The piano however, has been wonderfulyl written for IMO - professional stuff!! THe only overall nitpick is that it sounded a little repetitive by the end - it was just repeating what had already been done earlier. Perhaps it's worth adding a woodwind/fr horn line?? Very nice writing overall, just fix those strings and add some filling, and it'll be top notch. Awesome!!
May 3, 201016 yr Author Thank you, @Phanto, that description of yours, the "emotional roller-coaster" is fitting... and that's what love is, then, I guess. But you're right, it really sounds more like a sad love, or an unanswerd one. About the recording: I used these sweet little small condenser mics: http://www.thomann.de/gb/the_tbone_sc140_stereoset.htm and I'm really quite surprised about the quality, I mean they were so cheap and I really only used these two. So I just exportet a mixdown without the virtual piano, and then deleted all the vsti tracks so that I could keep the tempo track. Then I loaded the Cubase project on my laptop, and played with the strings and metronome in the headphones...
May 3, 201016 yr It came out pretty good. A live instrument in your midi mock-up always brings life into the piece. And I must say that these mics really seem like bargain.
May 5, 201016 yr Author Yes they really are, love them :) @Cheese, sorry must have overlooked your post. around 1:25 it's the 10 cello expressive vib patch... sometimes sounds a bit unnuatural, but very emotional imo. And yes, I just took about half of the piece and repeated that at 3:00 to make it longer ;) When I have time, maybe, I shall vary it a bit... Thanks for commenting!
