Orchestral piece in Eflat maj

Featured Replies

Ok so this is a piece for Strings (no double bass), Harp, CA, Clar, and Bassoon.

It's taken me about 3 weeks to get all of this down. It isn't finished. I'm not where form-wise i'm going with this.

No title yet.

Probably one of my best works so far.

I'd appreciate feedback if you can spare the time...

a few pointers to using Finale and GPO more efficiently:

do not write "tremolo" in the string parts. Rather, use the articulation tool to add the 3 slash marks (articulation number 34) over each note ("arco" is NOT the indication for "no more tremolo").

in the VST setup, turn on the Ambience Reverb, and slide the "Dry" knob over to the right, almost to the end.

a notation issue: measure 66 in the celli - the slur starts on the FIRST note of a tied pair, and ends on the LAST note of another tied pair. So that particular slur would go from the 2nd beat of measure 66 to the first beat of measure 68.

Same thing goes for the slur in measure 69 - it should actually start a measure earlier and end on the half note.

check your slurs through-out the piece, this is a recurring error.

from the point of view of orchestration, you could have included the contra-basses, perhaps with a few pizz notes here and there to underline the melody or the harmony.

I think some of your phrasing in the woodwind parts needs work. to my eyes it doesn't really follow the normal flow of the musical phrases.

On the other hand, the phrases in the strings are too long. Slurs in string parts represent bowing, and you should consider that movement when you indicate those slurs.

musically, I really liked the introduction. I thought it was a bit of a shame that the same sort of harmony didn't quite follow through-out the piece. there were some nice quasi-Copland progressions in the opening four measures.

I liked the section at 1:30 - 1:45, its feels like that its leading up to something, yet it doesn't feel "finished." Also, some of the harmonies doesn't feel right. I thought that 3:20 - 3:35 was beautiful, with a nice resolution.

I was only able to hear the MIDI version (and I'm not at home where I can examine the piece), but I hear what I suppose is a lonnnnnnnnggg tremelo hold in the background. Should give it some variations. Then again, it could just be the MIDI.
