Musical theatre scene/piece suggestions?

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

A group of my friends and I would like to arrange a scene or song of some kind just for fun - probably from musical theatre works (possibly operatic?). I'm not very familiar with musical theatre, so I was hoping some of you would have a few suggestions.

Here's a little about us, vocally:

- Soprano/mezzo-soprano, classically trained, sings opera, musical theatre and pop.

- Contralto, inexperienced vocalist (though a decent musician!).

- Me: Tenor, mostly operatic (and some rock - progressive metal especially).

- Another tenor, mostly a pop singer.

Anyone have suggestions for scenes/pieces in musical theatre (or perhaps songs of other types) that can utilize our entire ragtag bunch of vocalists?

Thanks,

Laogeodritt

76 Trombones!

But anything from The Music Man is awesome.

I would recommend anything from South Pacific - it seems to fit your range (a lot of tenor and baritone solos or melodies) and your musical tastes, maybe not the metal though.

Thanks for the suggestions, Tokkemon, Impresario.

I've taken a quick look at South Pacific, and I rather like it so far. Might need adjustments for our vocal types... It'd first help if I could determine the voice type for Émile. I've found two (seemingly unreliable) sites that list the characters and their vocal type/ranges. One says baritone, the other says bass. Wha-?

Not really sure about The Music Man... Story alone doesn't appeal to me as much, anyway.

Can't really help you there. I assumed from the singing and band version that it was a baritone, but most sites I found say bass, including some newspaper reviews.

I would say he is a baritone range, with a big bass sound. Much resonance is needed!
