In-person Tutor?

Featured Replies

I'm not asking for an online hook-up, though any help I could possibly get here would be more than nice, I'm just wondering how I would go about finding a composition/theory [in that order] teacher that I could see to get hands-on training.

I really work better hearing and seeing what I'm supposed to do, rather than just reading it. I mean, I -can- read something out of a book, but things go far quicker for me when I have someone to ask questions about it.

So basically, is there some sort of music-teacher yellow pages that I could check for taking composition classes from someone in my area?

Any help is much obliged :)

It should really be theory then composition, you can't compose with out knowing the rudiments of music theory..

There isn't any sort of yellow pages for music teachers, other than the yellow pages itself. You're best off contacting your local council music service (if there is one) and ask them. Still, composition tutors are quite thin on the ground.

Whats your area? (Sorry if thats rude some how)

you can check if there are any adds about music teachers looking for students in the youth clubs .. or cultural clubs (if you have such things in your country .. ) but most of the adds you will find will be about teaching instruments .. so you will have to look very hard ..

or you can go to an institute .. (i don't know about where you are from but in Tunisia we have a state controlled "conservatoire" in almost every town .. there you can attend lessons in small class-rooms 10/15 students where you can learn music theory with different tutors ..

hope that I have been a bit of a help :)

I live in the US, so you'd think we'd have an institute or some such thing, but alas, I live in Georgia. We're a bit short on the niceties in life lol.

The reason I'm more interested in composition is because I've already studied theory quite a bit for the past few years.

I don't even know if there -is- a music council in the Metro-Atlanta area : / it's a bit of a mess.

How lax of me. As soon as I posted this, I remembered the GMTA [Georgia Music Teacher's Association] and looked one up.

Annnnd.... there aren't any composition OR theory teachers in my area :(

I really appreciate it :)

Unfortunately, Statesboro is really far away from where I live >.<

Ah well, know any good books/treatises that talk about composition?
