This is a solo bass clarinet composition I did for university. It's the 2nd time I've ever written for a solo instrument and the first time i've ever written for a pitched one, so this wasn't very easy! The problem with writing for a solo instrument is that you can't repeat the same idea's over and over again like you can with large ensembles where you can just change the texture. You have to constantly reinvent throughout. To make something interesting with lots of room for experimentation I went for quite an abstract sense of tonality, with a sort of eastern feel I guess. I have 2 basic melodic idea's in the piece, the slow melody at the beginning, and the triplets that come after, and then I tried to combine them together at bit more towards the end. For once I've put the score up as well! Anyway, hope you like it!

Wow, I really fell in love with this one - it's simple, short but it's one of the best things I've heard all week, probably because it's so effective. I can clearly hear all your melodies and what you derive from them - that's one of the charateristics of a ''good'' composition, if you ask me - good use of material. Your harmonic language was also pleasing to the ear, it was more-or-less tonal but seemed to be triadic all the same. I appreciate the use of all the bass clarinet's registers as well. I have nothing bad to say about this, really, keep up the good work!
