Repeat sign after three beats in a 4/4 measure.

Recommended Posts

Hello,

My page lay-out barely solved, I have yet another question regarding Finale. Erroneously I posted yesterday I was working with 2010, yet instead I use 2009. Sorry for that.

The problem I am facing now is a pick-up measure which does not want to behave exactly as I would like it to behave.

I'll explain.

My sonata "in the old style" starts with a pick-up measure (beat 4). Hence according to what I was taught the last bar should end on beat 3. As of the last bar the whole section containing the exposition and transitions of the both themes is to be played again. So, checking printed manuscripts, I noticed that they put a repeat sign at the end of the last measure which only has three beats. Beat 4 is the pick-up beat of the first measure of the development (Do not know if I make sense here...my English is too poor when dealing with specialized terminology). I can place a repeat sign but it comes at the end of the measure, not after the third beat.

When playing around I somehow got it after the third beat at a given moment, yet the next measure is a full (4 beat) measure, which I do not want as it has to be only one beat.

How do I proceed to resolve this problem?

Thank very much in advance.

Can you switch that measure to an unmarked 3/4? That might be a work-around. However, I'd lay it out so that the 3/4 bar is at the end of a line, so it doesn't look that wonky. Alternatively, repeat after the pick-up measure and give the content of that measure to beat 4 of the last measure before the repeat.

Uneducated answers, but it's a place to start.

Easy.

1) Edit the time signature of measure in question. Set it to 1/4 (or however many notes you need for that measure)

2) Click the "Options >>>" button in the time sig change dialog box

3) Checkmark the little box that says "Use different time signature for display"

4) Set the time signature you want to be showing in this bottom area. In this case, 4/4 which is default already. Try it, it should make it look perfectly how you want it.

PS

You can also do this to the REPEAT measure. Set it to 3/4 with a display of 4/4. But you said that issue was already taken care of.

Sounds like Ferk's on the right track. You'll need to use the Time Signature Tool on pickup measures to give them the correct number of beats, then check the box for Use a Different Time Signature for Display in order to keep the old time signature.

Edit: Looks like Peter just beat me to the explanation!

Hello,

Thanks all for the quick replies. They were very helpfull indeed. Jeeh, what an handicapt person I am when it comes to using computer programs...

Anyway, I followed your suggestion, Peter, and it worked fine. I have the bar split where I wanted it to split (3+1). Thanks a lot :-). The only thing Finale does is a layout thing as he puts the 4 beat of the measure on a new system instead of having it after the measure as beat n° 4. It would be nice if this could be fixed so it looks very "professionally" :-)

Once again, many thanks,

WS

Lock it into that line.

...nrr. It's hard to explain.

Select the mass edit tool, click the measure you want to move up back into the line above. then push the up arrow button on your keyboard. It'll lock that measure into the line above it.

And don't forget jrcramer's suggestion to keep the m#s right.

[edit]

Jrcramer's way works as well. Two ways to do system locks.
