Help with a Soler trill

Featured Replies

I am just starting to write music using a score-writing application called MuseScore. I'm starting off by attempting to re-create a keyboard sonata by Antonio Soler (1729-1783).

I believe I am able to write the whole thing from scratch, except for one complicated, frustrating trill making its first appearance stretching from measure 53 to the first note in measure 54. I opened the MIDI file representing the work with MuseScore, but I can't make out the trill.

I have a screenshot of the trill (as seen on MuseScore) and the source MIDI file attached to this post. And apparently the sequence of the trill is a 16th note, followed by a series of 32nd notes, followed by a note tie continuing up to the first note (an 8th note) of measure 54. Could someone please give me a hand?

I can't help you, but it seems like a software I would not want to use. Do you like this MuseScore?

Yes, I do. First of all, it's free. Second of all, it has features I've never seen on a score writing program before (i.e. custom key signatures).

Do you suggest something better that's free and can display notes accurately from MIDI files?

bump

Not exactly a widely used notation software, so it seems no one has any advice. Also....one day hardly warrants "bumping" your thread.

Try bumping your issue over to the MuseScore forum...

I really have no experience with any free notationsoftware other than the sibelius/finale demos. It could be this is the best it gets, but im kinda used to finale, so I suspect even sibelius would be something I'd not like (I have tried it though and did not like it very much). I'd be what they call a finale guy.

I thought though that you had yourself put this piece in, but you inserted a midi. Even sibelius and finale would show a crappy version of the midi file because a midifile is usually pretty crappy itself. Does not have to do with your software I believe. That trill being written like that is... well... just annoying but I've seen it many times before even in finale ;).

if you want specific help on a musescore issue, I'd take robin's advice :)

Cheers

The problem is, I've tried the MuseScore forum in the recent past, before I joined Young Composers, but with very little luck. See this link: http://musescore.org/en/node/8758

Is there anything you suggest I could do now?

  • 4 months later...

Rendering midi as notation is always going to return sub par results. The best thing to do is use it for roughly getting down the outline of the piece and then use the original sheet music to compare and correct. Personally I find it much easier to manually input each note from the original sheet music...then again, I think I can "type" music faster than I can type words

Finale (and I believe Sibelius) will automatically render trills, but it looks like you're trying to render something very particular here. No matter what software you use, I think you may have to write that ornament out just as you have done. Only so much can be done with a software application.

That trill looks... weird. Did you enter this in by playing it on a midi keyboard or did you manually write it in?
