January 24, 201115 yr Hi all,Long time no see. This is work, premiered in November 2010, in Seattle, WA, under the button of Johan Louwersheimer and the orchestra of Octava Chamber Orchestra.I cannot offer the score, this time, due to commercial restrictions, but I hope the recording will be enough.I find that this work goes into more approachable venues, aesthetically, than my older works and I have to admit that this is something I enjoy! Nikolas Superabimus
January 24, 201115 yr Hey, glad to see you back.... Sorry for this question but, is the orchestra slightly detuned or you use microtonals ? (not at 7:02+ I know that's ok) The language is atonal but very clear to me, congrats, atonal+clear is not easy to achieve, I enjoyed too, very pro  (I can delete the sneeze at 2:59 if you want)
January 24, 201115 yr Author Hey, glad to see you back.... Sorry for this question but, is the orchestra slightly detuned or you use microtonals ? Glad to be back. I'm still rather bugged with the uploading system, but whatever... :-/ I don't think it's atonal. Perhaps the chord structure is slightly atonal, or at least non triadic, but it's heavily based on certainy pitches, which rather makes it... peculiar, yet clear as you say. This is a live recording, and yes, they are slightly detuned, but I don't really mind. And I don't mind the sneeze either. I kinda like it. As evidence this actually took place, if you know what I mean. Thanks for listening and for posting.
January 25, 201115 yr haha, yeah I guess the sneeze gives the realistic effect, but we're in the beginning of the days when one can't simply know if its real or a library... (Miroslav comes with coughs and noises and VSL sounds wow) The limits of tonal and atonal territories are not clear enough to know when exactly something is atonal or not, I did feel those basic pitches, in that case this is a very advanced development in a non atonal language, in any case I did like how it sounds, I hear a little of Penderecki, Lutoslawski i think even Shostakovitch, but I suppose more than any other, you are the one is sounding there... Also, these harmonies can easily fall into something boring, either the true language is too complex to recognize while you listen, like a too fast streaming :P or, there are no language at all, just attempts of one, Yours wasn't boring at all, I don't know your portfolio but you should compose something like this but larger, a chamber symphony perhaps.
January 25, 201115 yr Author haha, yeah I guess the sneeze gives the realistic effect, but we're in the beginning of the days when one can't simply know if its real or a library... (Miroslav comes with coughs and noises and VSL sounds wow)Yup. Though I never liked any of the two libraries you mention actually! I do love LASS though, for strings (promise to post something with piano and strings once I get into my studio... commercial though, to show the opportunities you get with LASS).The limits of tonal and atonal territories are not clear enough to know when exactly something is atonal or not, I did feel those basic pitches, in that case this is a very advanced development in a non atonal language, in any case I did like how it sounds, I hear a little of Penderecki, Lutoslawski i think even Shostakovitch, but I suppose more than any other, you are the one is sounding there...WOW! Thank you!I have to admit that I don't think in tonal, or atonal terms really. I find these terms to be somewhat out of date. And thus I can't really describe the works I compose. For all it's worth I do feel this work is quite more approachable (as I said in my OP) than my other works, but it remains a challenge still. Again thank you.Keep in mind that I don't compose "for fun" (although I'm always having a great time when I compose! :D). This was a commission from the orchestra. If there's a symphonic orchestra who'd like to commission me, then by all means I'd love to work on larger forces, but since there's nothing at the moment, I'm sticking to what I can get performed, and paid for! :) My portfolio can be heard at my website, btw! ;)
January 27, 201115 yr Hi Nikolas, Congratulations on your premiere! I enjoyed this piece. It reminded me of Honegger symphony 2...especially the ostinato in the low strings. Yes, there are some intonation issues, but it's not too bad. I thought it was tonal but spicey with some interesting textures. I thought the ending was a bit abrupt but otherwise enjoyed it.
January 27, 201115 yr Author Hey Karelm, Thanks for the comments. I can't say I blame you for the ending, but I've got a small feelings it was the performance, which gave that impression rather than the work. At least, for me, it worked fine when I was working on the work! I haven't heard the 2nd symphony of Honegger, I've got to admit, so I can't check, right now if you're right or now. I do think, though, that my work was close to those of Shostakovich and Bartok, most probably along with a little Stravisnky... ;) What have you been up lately, yourself?
February 7, 201115 yr I enjoy this (Well, what I do not enjoy of you? ;) ) This brings me memories of a lot of problems. ;) Except it has a heavier tone, sounds sexier, darker, romantic, and a bit barbaric. Congratulation on the premiere and money, and thanks for share a beautiful work.
February 10, 201115 yr Author heh... Thanks man. And you're right about reminding you of some problems... And thanks back to you! :)
February 10, 201115 yr Author I'm sorry but I can't. The score will be for sale shortly and as such I can't distribute it for free. :( Those who remember me from previous times, know that I always uploaded the scores when I had the chance. Sadly that tims is gone! :(
February 11, 201115 yr ok. im learning composition and was wondering how you wrote first few measures
February 11, 201115 yr Author I don't think it's extremely complicated, you could (with some effort), try to transcribe it. I also don't think it's hugely contemporary, so I guess there's plenty of other scores (available in IMSLP for free) to check out and analyze. Still, once I find some time, I'll send you the 1st page (or even post it here), to have a look.
February 15, 201115 yr I really enjoyed this piece. These are nice and accessible harmonies. I heard lots of tonal implications, in an almost triadic form. But it wasn't tonal. If it has to be labeled, then I guess something like polytonal would be more fitting. I am guessing nikolas will think this term out of date too ;) Though, there are chords that made less sense for me, or at least I cound not place then/understand them in the context. For example the ending sounded out of place, until I listened again and found 2:26, the same chords, as an introduction to the more barbaric ostinato passage. The phrase starting at 5:50 reminded me of Shos 10th string quartet, 3rd movement. Is this an intentional quote?
