March of the Ice Man

Featured Replies

I originally wanted to compose a full symphonic set for this legend, but when I went to write the first theme, I found I had explained the entire story in a very short amount of time.

My main goall was to give the orchestra a backbone which all sections could easily manipulate to be interpreted in the same manner. My second goal was to give the storm a seperate theme.

The first full minute was meant to chaotic, to help build the suspension and leave people lost. (I will be refering to the story of the Ice Man when attempting to explain the motives; the url to the story is http://cherokee.org/home.aspx?section=cult...ID=1UXpqEU1JsY= )

The horns are the flames, and the drums are the people's prayers, the strings and woddwinds are mostly representing the hopelessness of the people. Finally, the only sections left with any sound are the strings, and they are the journey of the people to find the Ice Man; at that point, the woddwinds become the Ice man, and the Horns become once again, anticipation. The rest of the piece is the storm that floods the fire and stops the Earth from burning, and the end is given a second and simple motiv for the babbling creeks.

I only wish I had a complete theme for the Ice Man, and I know I need a better intro.

Let me know your thoughts.

I like the way the song developed. It really feels like it tells a story...however, I can't put my toung on the melody. There are too many different instruments doing their own thing. They're not working together as a team in some areas and the result is an almost chaotic group of illegible sounds. Try making melodies 'come together' more often. Also, near the middle it just gets flat out random...like you banged your head on the keyboard and whatever showed up in the notation program you used. It didn't make much sense and it was really random. After a while the song got boring as it was mearly repeating the same 'thought' over and over again. I couldn't finish it completely. I really 'felt' the song pretty well in some areas though.

If you'ld like I can isolate the two main melodies I tryed to lace together, I think some of the arrangement needs major work, and I'm on that now, especially the volume of the voices. I did this song completely by free hand first, the middle part was actually one mellody forward, and another one backward, which when the second or first is reversed, mix in a nice way. Give me a day to get some midis of the seperate ideas, and then I will explain what I was trying to say through it.
