Ode To David

this was the first ode i wrote for my friend David Stuart, he said he wanted an orchestral piece with blast beats, blast beats are a type of drumming that is found in certain sub-genres of heavy metal music, mainly death metal which i am a big fan of. this is not nessesarily a serious piece but i found the idea of it very fun.it is scored for: 2 Horns, tenor and bass trombone, tuba, timpani, glockenspiel, a metal drum kit and strings.heres the link to the youtube video:

The primary complaint I have about this piece is it's repetition - not just of the motifs, but in the structure. You repeat phrases over and over again, and each one nearly the same way that it becomes very predictable. It sounds - not to be too blunt - like background, movie, or game music. You might be going for that, I'm not sure. And if you are, my bias is simply that I've never, or at least rarely ever, enjoyed that kind of music. I also get the feeling that you want to evoke a feeling of "epicness": the piece has that strong, moving and powerful journey-like feeling (like Pirates of the Caribbean, mixed with some rocking percussion); it has its march-like across the Sahara spots - which really take up most of the piece - with difficulty and despair, but mixed with passion, an then with small moments of hope - major key change with some lyrical and less rhythmic phases - and then finishing with triumph, or a dramatic rise to yet a new, less traveling scene in the movie. But this is all kind of thrown overboard by its incessant repetitiousness, and then its predictability. I would watch out for that.

This sounds like it should be in a movie or something.. like something epic and fantastical and action-packed... There's passion, there's emotion, there's adventure to it... Would have been a good film score... :jedi:
