November 29, 201114 yr Hey everybody, my name is Brandon. I'm 17 years old and I'm planning on being a music composition major in college. I was wondering if any of you could listen to one of my compositions I'm writing for an upcoming showcase and give me any constructive criticism. I'm glad I have the opportunity to critique and discuss music with all of you - I am generally classically trained though I love jazz as well. Hope to get to know you all better, -Brandon
November 30, 201114 yr Welcome to YC! I'm sure you'll enjoy it here and get lots of helpful advice (I know I have)! Do you compose by hand or computer (the lazy method)? How much experience do you have in the vast and amazing field of composition? Do you like György Ligeti's music?
November 30, 201114 yr Author I compose on the computer :/ - I generally use Finale in school w/ midi program. I don't have much experience in composition to be honest, but I understand early classical forms well and I know a lot of music theory. I've started composing a lot more recently and am currently writing a piece for strings for an upcoming showcase. Gyorgy Legeti is pretty abrasive, but I like some of it. I've only heard Le Grande Macabre though. Have you heard Shostakovich's string quartets? They're fantastic! I especially like no. 3, 6, & 8.
November 30, 201114 yr I don't really know his string quartets. You may like Ligeti's Musica Ricercarta.
