Hey! I'll join the competition too, if that's ok. I have the need to write something in a romantic style again!

Feels like Tchaikovsky was a surefire winner until Brahms, Stravinsky, Bartok and Mahler signed in as well...

I had to read your last two posts a couple of times to understand what you were getting at. :P (I think I understand....)

A change of meter is fair game, yes?

  • Author

Sure.

  • Author

That's the kind of change that keeps the integrity of the melody, but puts an original spin on it.

Think like this: If Mozart wrote the Variations on Twinkle... little star, you knew in EVERY iteration, whether it be minor, in a different tempo, in a different key, a different meter, you ALWAYS knew what the melody originally was.

But if we're placing our own twist without explicitly stating the original material in its original form, is it still fair game? Or is it a Theme and Variations what we should be looking for?

I would like to enter. I hope it is not too late, is it?

  • Author

Austenite, I'd like to handle that on a case by case basis. Feel free to send me the material your thinking about specifically and I'll tell you if it's ok. Keep this in mind: No matter how you change the melody, it still has to be the melody, or what's the point of having it at all?

Ivan! You're in.

If it's not too late, sign me up. I'm feeling romantic.

Alright! The competition is now FULL with Bachian taking the last spot. If anybody wants to drop out, he/she should do it sooner rather than later so that more people can enter. Otherwise, the waiting list is now open. :)

REMEMBER: Have compositions uploaded sometime during the day of June 30th or sooner. ANYTIME July 1st EST will be considered too late and will not be judged.

I will take a spot if someone drops out. I want to give a shot at romanticism.

SCRATCH THAT..... I'm already doing the July thing...... and I have a lot of work to do for it.

lol. k.

I'm going to have to drop out of this month's one.

I would like to join the waiting list for this. It's summer, after all.

A REMINDER THAT THE COMPETITION WILL BE OVER SOON! GET TO WRITING, OR FINISH UP. :D

OK, gentlemen... Since Morivou is so eager to have our submissions (and he might not be alone), here's my shot at this: Souvenir from Pemberley, Op. 32

Fourth place is thus settled :pinch: . You can now begin the fight for the podium  ...

Right, I'll put mine here so you can't miss it.

Where do I find the motif?

never mind. found it. Im not sure if I can write a piece in 5 days, though. I'll just do the july one. It turns out that I already have two 2-minute movements on a piece based off "A Passage to India" that I wrote for English Class. The entire tone poem is not done yet, though.

I'm afraid I must quit....I'm at my composition camp and internet is not allowed..........(shhh)

Treehugger, I expect if someone found you sneaking a composition on to the "verboten" interwebs that they would understand.

JUSTTTT a couple of days left. :) Let's get those entries in!

I realize this is like the third time I've changed my mind, but I am going to have to drop out. I recently had to get the hard drive my computer replace which basically means I got a new computer. I was able to save all my files to a flash drive, but all my programs were deleted. Now I got my computer back a day before the deadline without the software I need to upload my piece. Sorry about this, but there's no way I'll be able to finish in time. I'm still planning on finishing it some time because I had some good ideas, just not as a part of this competeition.
