I'm analyzing "Nobilissima Visione" by Paul Hindemith and I'm having some trouble figuring out his intentions.

The harmonies played by the strings are clear, but I'm not sure how they are related to the flute melody.

The first group is part of the F minor scale, the second one part of the Bb minor scale. But why?

Does anyone know more?
