A SHORT TALE

This piece is written for a small chamber orchestra of Flute, Clarinet, 2 Trumpets in Bb, 2 Basoons, Tenor Trombone, Bass Trombone and Vibraphone. This was a project that i was required to do while i am studying master degree in Royal Holloway.

Just to give you a background information on this piece; While working on this piece I realised i wanted to use some tonal elements (tonal harmony, melody) for a change from a-tonal stuff that I was doing lately. Then I end up using jazzy chords such as minor 9th's , 7b5 chords, slash chords etc. But the trick was to maintain my own stile while doing it, and not to sound too traditional. At the end, I cannot say I was totally acurate on that. but anyway, this is composing, nothing ends up as we planned is it ?

The piece is divided in 5 parts. I was imagining a fairy tale -not a particular one, but that was the overal thought . Something like an adventurous journey in a magical land and the characters being kids. They face many obstacles and difficulties as evident in the music, and find their way out at the end. This is just an example i just made it up now but this was the kind of thing i was thinking while writing.

This is a little bit out of my norm. I can't imagine what a piece like this sounds like to be performed live. Interestingly enough, though, it was much better than I expected it to be. It seemed like I was watching traffic. Each instrument represents a different vehicle on the highway. They are all different sizes, different speeds, but all going the same direction. Every once in a while you see two cars that compliment each other, and you hear daylight, or a clearly consonant sound, but it disappears just as quickly. I found it very interesting to listen to.

Thank you for your comment. Your interpretation of the story is what really excited me. Thats precisely what I want my audience to think. To make their own stories, and stories that really fit, like your with the trafic, really makes me think I am doing the right thing.

There was something about that piece that made my ears staid petrified for the sake of listening to it entirely. It is written in a rondo like form which clearly narrows the whole picture down. In other words, knowing its nature, I can deduce the scene depicted is of an 40s montion picture: a black and white movie - A cafe scene with lots of cigarrets.

critically speaking ...the transition of the chords A section was unique and intersting though a bit (to my taste) abrupt. these of course might be the style which is unknown to me . Thanks for sharing your music.

I posted on your other thread for this piece, but I have an addition. I like the cadenza-like sections starting at measure 193, and I understand that they are supposed to showcase individuals' virtousity, but do you think you maybe got a little carried away? The tpt. part at 193 looks like a scallop to play. Not only is it fast, but it covers a massive range in like 1 beat? also keeping the clarinet in time at measure 210...

Also please explain your intention with the stacatto eighth notes during the "A" sections (trombone). Did you just want to break up the sustained nature of the section? I think it works well either way, with or without. Just curious.

You have also said this might be a style that you dont know. well, if there is such style, I dont know either!

I have always dreamed of becoming a filim music composer. But more and more i get into composing, i get more away from filim music. Although I find it very fun, I dont know if I want to get into it seriously. I have many filim music experiments of my own including one comissioned work for a documentary. Perhaps one day I will share them with you.

cmaj, you are absolutely right about the difficulty of performing this. But as this is a solo part, a performer can play it at a compfortable speed. As I agree it is difficult, I might have to talk with a trumpet player about this.

**The stacato eight notes are as you said to have a break from the sustained notes and have a bit more movement from the bass. I think that they are a good adittion to the flow.**

I'll confess at the outset I didn't like it so will avoid tendering a review. Just personal preference.

One can't like everything. But, like Nightengale says, it might be different in public performance though I think you may have to review some of the cadenza passages. I got as far as section IV.

I feel like I should be high when I listen to this. I do think it is a strange work of tension. I like how it gets jazzy then gets all crazy and scraggy. I like it... just in a strange way that I can't really describe. I love music, it lets us look into the minds of other people. Music can only move two ways... up or down... it's different for each person. Hearing this I feel like I know you or somthing.

Thats and interesting point you've made. I agree with you. Music can cominicate and somehow tell something about the composer aswell.

Actually, I rather liked it. It wasn't so much the piece in particular that I was so fond of, but the way you wrote it - does that make sense? It made me want to listen to what else you have posted here (I'm only just getting to your stuff because of some other work I've been doing the last day or two).

The candenza sections were pretty wild - I can't open Finale files so i couldn't review the score properly, so that's just from listening. I suppose other people have already mentioned that, so that's not really a concern to me at this point.

What I really, really liked about it was the delicious chords you had in there when everyone was playing tutti after a section of conversations between the instruments. They were very creative and just very vast, very colorful. I sometimes sit for hours at the piano just playing combinations of chords until something really strikes me. I definitely was a fan of the combinations you chose.

I found myself bobbing my head along when I was listening to it the second or third time, heh heh.

Okay, now I have to go listen to some of your other stuff.

Chords ? yes, delicious! My love and absolute dedication to the jazz harmony. All these years, playing tunes from Real Books, Fake Books, I found myself interested into Jazz even more. And that is quite obvious with especially this piece.
