What is the standard length for verses?

Featured Replies

Are there any standards about how long the verse should be? Especially when compared to the chorus. My problem is that when I write lyrics, my verses are about the same size as the choruses, i.e. short. Is it okay to have short verses or should the verses be longer than choruses? Also, are there any other rules for verses?
Also, sorry if I am in the wrong thread. Point me to the right one.

Whenever I create hip-hop beats for free and pass them out to anyone who wants them I usually went by this structure:

Intro, Verse 1, Pre-chorus, Chorus, Verse 2, Pre-Chorus, Chorus, Bridge, Verse 3, Pre-chorus, Chorus, Ending.

Here is how many bars I personally love to do...

Intro: 4 or 8 bars

Verse one: 16 bars

Pre-chorus: 4 bars

Chorus: 4 or 8 bars

Verse two: 8 or 16 bars

Bridge: 4 or 8 bars (depending on the length of the chorus.

Verse three: 16 bars

Ending: 4 or 8 bars

It really depends on how many things you want to say before going into the next part. If you have a preference it would be good to work close with the producer of your track.

My band and I have a bit of a varying formula but...
Intro (4 or 8 bars), Verse (8 bars if there is a pre-chorus, 16 if there is no pre-chorus), ChorusONE (8 bars), Verse, ChorusTWO (16 bars), BridgeOPTIONAL(8 or 16 bars), SoloSectionOPTIONAL (8 or 16 bars), Chorus (16 bars). We don't normally add a third verse or ending bit, but if we do add an ending it's normally 4 or 8 bars.
