Canzonetta for Oboe and Strings

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I started this piece in September of 2014 and then ran into some crazy writer's block which, coupled with life changes causing me to not have much time to write, made me feel that I would be failing if I wasn't able to finish this piece. It's in a similar style to my sextet (finished in 2013) and my piano sonata (finished in 2012) but I wanted to make an effort to write less blocky music. Although there are still sections of 4 bar phrases and motivic sequencing, I wanted to make that the exception and try to derive harmony from interacting vocal lines whenever possible. I guess if it is so flowing and mellow that it makes you fall asleep, then that means I successfully wrote some meandering lines.

Hope you like it. (I realize the score isn't completely neat and tidy) (Thanks to Danishali903 for a rendering with GPO).

I wouldn't say it made me fall asleep. The harmonies here are pretty interesting and I thought it was pleasant to listen to. All of the instruments seem to be written for very well, as far as I can tell. I noticed several places where there was imitation and other interactions between the different voices, and it all seemed smooth and well-executed. I liked it a lot!

Btw, it's interesting to me that you're trying to make your music meander and flow a little more freely, as my trouble seems to be that it meanders off so far it just gets totally lost.

A very mature work and nicely put together.

Critique: You write for the horizontal plane very nicely. What I would like is more on the vertical. Expand the range and expand on your use of build ups.

Think of how you write as a plus sign or a wave.

Great Piece.
