Violin Sonatina in C minor

Featured Replies

This piece is for violin and piano accompaniment. I was very limited in what i could write becasue I had to write for an amateur violinist.

Although it is titled Sonatina, it isn't exactly in traditional sonata form. It took about three days to write maybe four or five hours.

I would really enjoy hearing how I could improve this piece or what you thought of the piece. Thanks! ;)

Exellent work !! Good knowledge of clasical repertoire is obvious. Also, the harmony, the instrumentation, the form are all in place. Nothing stands out as being "not in place". You sure put a good deal of knowledge in this and every beat represents this. The main theme is very neat and simple. The piano writing however, in some places, needs a bit re-touch.

The repeated 8note figure of the piano, i felt, somewhat disturbing. 7 years ago, when I was studying composition, my teacher suggested me something exactly like the case of yours. He told me that, if you want your melody to have more importance and stand out from the rest, miss the first beat of the accompaniment.

As in your case, try putting 8th rest at the beginning of each measure on the R.H. See how that will sound. maybe you like it..

On m.98, there is a big leap on the RH piano. this may be a bit problematic when came to perform this piece. If you have a piano try to see it yourself, with this speed its quite tricky, if not imposible. Try writing convinient passages.

I liked the cadenza. It seemed you needed it there and it came right there! good thinking

Keep up the good work and let me know if my suggestions were any use to you.

***If this is the final socre, you need to put violin staff on top of the piano***

Actually, yes this was very helpful, probably the most informative and constructive reply Ive ever gotten here. Thanks! I'm going to take away the first eighth note chord in the repeating eigth notes section, it does sound better actually. And i fixed the part in that one measure.

I felt that the cadenza was needed as well, but if I have any complaints about it, its that the cadenza is too short, I just didn't know what I could do working with an amateur violinist. Thanks again.

Oh no, thats okay, i think you're probably right about the chordal structure and i think i did repeat the theme one too many times. Thanks.

Actually, this piece is rather dull. It was quite boring to listen too, and extremely cliche. The trills were annoying, and there was no development. Your use of the piano was not maturely done either. Your chordal structure was too simple, and the piece was too repetitive. I liked the first 2 notes, though.

If you had suggestions why not give them so it can be any help to him rather than saying dull, boring, cliche. This way of reacting is extremeley childish and would not help anyone.

I liked the first 2 notes, though.

and what is this supposed to mean? humiliate ?

Good on the page, not on the stage.

LOL, exactly

Daniel, please forgive Nico. When he sees what in his oppinion is an overly praising review, he automatically feels the need to trash the composer of the piece in question's confidence. ;) (This is just an assumption, of course, but I bet i'm right!)

From what you set out to create, I found this very fitting - it's very suspensefull on a small scale, and has a lovely feel to it. My only criticism would be that I found it to be a bit wandering (read:lacking in structure), but that's just the form not appealing to me. Good work overall!

Edit: I'm not one to nag about notational grievances, but why did you place the violin part under the piano part? :P

:)

I'm sorry, but the piano part made me not want to listen to this piece for very long. I think if you changed up the accompaniment, put in some interesting chords, and made it less repetitive, this piece would be very good, because you write wonderful melodies for the violin, but lose about 1/2 of the trills.

I hope this comment helps you out.

Very enjoyable. Thank you for sharing.

very nice!!!!!!

:D oops, finale... grrrrrrrr

I'm sorry, but the piano part made me not want to listen to this piece for very long.

How should I change it?

Ok, I haven't read what others have had to say, so bear with me if I repeat anyhting previously stated.

- At measure 14, where you have that eigth note pick-up to 15: I think you should drop it. It offsets the pattern, and doesn't really help at all.

- At 47, have the Violin descend to a G rather than stay on the Bb. It sounds more complete. Also, instead of having the eigth note pick-up, accent the G major chord, then turn the eigth note into a quarter note. It gives you more time to realize that it's a pick-up.

- At 50, again get rid of the pick-up all together.

- In the second to last measure, the second chord played in the treble clef should be (form the bottom) Bb, D, F, Bb. Then the final chord in that clef do a C minor chord. And maybe even do a triple stop on the violin? I always have to go and look at my orchestration books so I can be sure as to what works for triple stops, but you must know.

This was a great sonatina. I liked it a lot. Thank you for sharing.

EDIT: Never mind....I don't think that anything I said was previously stated. Nico is great once you get to know him. He can come off as a jerk at first, and he doesn't have very good advice, but he is a good kid.

Who's Evan???

Evan Duffy, ah his IM is pianobeast10489.

Anyway, I found parts of the piece to be rather too repetative. In, say, measures 15-17 the violin plays nothing but that which the piano is already playing, which is rather pointless. It doesn't add anything harmonically, and it wastes an opportunity for the violin to do something else, probably more interesting.

Fortuantely, as you progressed, the accidentals somewhat made up for it (they were very nice). I didn't like the trills in measures 64-69 (maybe it was finale, maybe it was there were too many, I dno). Although, I would watch out for using JUST eighth notes for measures on end, the ear starts to desire rhythmic variation.

The Solo was nice, and (if I'm not mistaken) was probably the most difficult part for the violinist in the piece, capped well by the coda.

Yeah, thats why I made it a mini cadenza, so he could take it at a slower tempo than the rest of the piece without the pianist getting all flustered.

Thanks

I thought it was a great piece. The trills are a bit excessive but the rest of it was good. As a violinist, I thought the piece would be to hard for me. The piano accompaniment complimented the violin part well. The cadenza was great too. I hope you continue writing this well if not better in the future. What inspired you to write this piece?

What inspired you to write this piece?

Well really I was at the piano just playing around and I came up with the main theme, I needed to write something for the violinist so I put in Finale and...

By the way, are there any other movements written and/or that you are planning to write?

Now I'm in trouble with Nico....

a very well constructed piece.

You are very talented

Your phrases are well constructed and easily to identify.Perhaps you might want to add a C phrase just for the end and make it more drammatic. It always works in this style

Good luck. Keep up the good work
