Allegro Animato

Here is my Allegro Animato for a string quartet. I... don't have much to say about it.

Some concerns: I think I'm going to change the very end (last four measures or so); perhaps to make it more dramatic or something. Also, there's one part in the middle which I didn't think sounded nice, but then I listened to it a few times and got used to it and so now I don't know whether I like it anymore or not.

Okay, these .MUS files were created using Finale 2006 so maybe that's the problem... though, if that's the case, it's too bad.

Here, I'll try attaching a second one, so see if that works.

Otherwise, can anybody at least just comment after just listening to the midi??? :lol:

Btw, I just gave this piece of music to my orchestra conductor... he seemed pleased and I asked him to critique it and give tips and such.

Somebody please give some comments if possible. Anything. Even if just about the midi...

I've managed to have a listen now, and I like the sprightly quality of the melody, and the modal harmonies :P . I do have a couple of suggestions - I think there's room for a bit more textural variety and countermelodic material. What you have is nice, beginning with the simpler homophonic melody/chordal structure, but the piece could maybe beneft from some more variation as it progresses. I did enjoy listening to it :huh:

The modal harmonies caught me by surprise at first - very nice! Also, pretty solid, as form goes. I would have liked to see a bit more playing with different modes when you modulate, and throwing in different harmonies as you do that. Also, a little variation on the theme - especially rhythmically - can go a long way toward making the piece more exciting.

Also, from a chamber musician's perspective: it seems like most of the melodic material is being played by the first violin, and everyone else gets mostly filler. A more equitable sharing of the interest would be a good thing. Besides, it seemed to me that you were using a motif that was tailor-made for counterpoint.

A fairly nice classical opening I think. Some nie tremolog going on it sounds like, or it may just be the midi. A fairly interesting opening theme, very stately I'd say. The sudden changes in volume at 0:55 were a nice surprise!

We seem to be in second theme material at 1:00. It doesn't seem to be as interesting as the opening material though. I don't know, just doesn't grab me a whole lot. Ah, by 2:00 we have managed to get a good feeling back. The piece is once more engaging and with interesting and exciting material. Sometimes, it's hard to describe why there would be such variations, but that is how it seems to me.

I can see why you are thingking of changing the ending. It is nice, but it doesn't really zing.

You've got soe good usical ideas here, but you've also got a few lackluster ones. Work on improving the second section and I think you'll be able to make this a more convincing whole.

liked very much the general mood of this piece - sober and elevated, almost epic in some sections - and the homophonic writing by itself does not bother me, but i agree with the others that the whole could be improved and made more intersting by adding some different textures, minor scales and/or a greater interaction between the voices - if not by full counterpoint at least by a kind of antiphonal procedure. anyway its a nice piece.
