Edit?

Featured Replies

It seems I can't edit my own posts. All other forums I know allow this, how comes I can't do it here?

EDIT: It seems that it is possible here, but not in the Off-topic forum. Or is it only possible for a certain time after the post has been sent (as in the old YC forum)?

The ability used to be removed two hours after the post was made. I just changed it so you can always edit. If anyone objects for any reason, do say so.

Two hours is actually better than the 30 minutes it used to be on "old YC." After that, it was etched in stone, often to the eternal chagrin of the author. The only solution then was deletion of the post, if I remember rightly.

Yeah but that was the beauty of it, eh?

True. Being able to edit your post might cause continuity issues later. I suppose the "quote" function will be useful to remedy that.

I think that a time limit is useful, for the simply reason of continuity. I've been on a couple of these style boards and continuity is very awkward indeed due to people editing and making big changes to their original posts. Sometimes this makes replies worthless and confusing.

If something's wrong with a post, simply add a new reply and make an addendum. It doesn't take 30 minutes to re-proof-read a post. (Proof reading should be done before it's even posted.)

Any chance of moving the spell check button to above the text box? I keep clicking on it instead of the post button (that's also in an awkward place). Getting that popup for spell checking is infuriating when it's not wanted. If I want to spell check something, I will be happy to look for the button elsewhere. Add reply, IMHO, should be directly below the text box with the options underneath that or above the text box.

I couldn't agree more.

I think the logic behind it is that you spell check your post before you reply. But I'll see what I can do.

That's the logic. However, these boards are designed to be fairly generic and must cater for people of all backgrounds and literary abilities. Here, the academic standard will be higher than average and so a spell checking program is of lesser importance that it would be to some other groups.

What language does the spell checker conform to?

I just clicked on it again, when I was thinking directly on the subject of the spell check button! How about moving the spell check button to the right and having the post message button to the left: or vice versa?

I'm not sure about the language exactly. But I just typed in "favour" and it allowed it, suggesting it's not American in case that was what you're wondering.

Having looked in the Skin Manager section in the admin CP, I can't find the section where the post screen buttons are created. But I'll look again in a second, and see if I have more luck.

I still don't see why there should be a time limit.....

Anyways, can the moderators and administrators still edit posts after the time limit? ;)

[EDIT: yes, we can. -Jacob]
