If you're talking about actual performance, not virtual via a daw, then best to become a performer. You start noticing the finer details of what makes performance what it is. Then if using a daw you can apply the same detail to every aspect of every note. It isn't just playing the notes, it's how they're played, doesn't matter whether an orchestra, ensemble, band or solo.
