Choral Competition - Judges Discussion Thread

Featured Replies

I'm gonna go ahead and not submit my piece for the competition. There's no way I'm going to finish it before Nov 1st, because I have pretty high hopes for it and I'm definitely not going to want to rush it for this, when I have a recording session planned for January.

So since I started the competition and all, I'll be the middle man person and oversee things as I've been doing, but not be a judge, You brought up a good point, Nightengale.

Although I did not enter the competition, I was wondering if

after the judging is complete and the winner announced will there be an audio link for the the YC community to hear the winning composition?

I think it would be a nice idea for the forum members to hear the winner and runner-ups or honorable mention pieces. That way the composer of the work can get even more recognition.

Yes, your Majesty (:shifty:), that is usually how it works. Don't worry, we'll all be able to bask in the gloriful music that comes out of this competition!

I see you got the little psychological humor from my screen name :P

It's a good think I don't take screen names like mine seriously at all ;).

Anyway, I pretty much figured you guys would post the the audio links of the winning pieces. I just thought I'd ask anyway, considering my great affection for choral/vocal music.

Since there is no definitive answer from all the judges on the judging criteria, the judges should, when scoring the pieces, score however they please, as long as the outcome is in a percentile out of 100. Either you can make a point system that equals 100 or 10 or something, or just use crunch the numbers into a percentile, this is how we will compare the different pieces.

For right now, as the composing is winding down to the deadline, I need all the judge's e-mail addresses, so I can send them to the competitors and so I can put them up in the Submissions thread. Please PM me your e-mails within the next two days!

Sounds good, Nick! Out of 100. Got it.

I'm ready... please don't delay too much to send the stuff for I won't have time to it if you do... ;)

*sniff* mine's sent...but Nickthoven never confirmed that he got it...

Is the submission deadline the tenth?

I thought it was the first.

The reviewing deadline is the 19th after all.

Oh good. I want plenty of time to review. Possibly over Thanksgiving, if possible...

*ahems in Mike's direction*

Has anyone gotten any e-mails? I haven't recieved anything yet.

Nick's profile says he hasn't been active since the 4th, so I think there will be a fair amount of delay in this, unless people can still get things judged by the 19th.

It's a bit annoying seeing as I had to rush to get finished.

Hey sorry everyone!! Please don't be angry or anything - my computer is completely knocked out right now. I woke up in the morning to check my e-mail and I had this black screen telling me my computer had no operating system! I will be getting my Windows Xp disk from my mom's house on Monday evening, which will hopefully fix the problem, so I will send everyone the entries as soon as I can Monday night.

He lives!

Haha yes just for the short time that my girlfriend's internet still works...

Also, I've been composing my own choral piece like mad lately, so I've been extremely busy to boot!

Well it's good to see you around, I was getting anxious...I'm in love with my piece :P

I feel for your trouble with winXP! Good luck getting that fixed.

The last time I saw that message, it was because my hard drive crashed. You might have to get a new one. I'm not sure just reinstalling the OS will work. Good luck to you, though, and just send us the submissions when you are able to.

Well now, I'm starting to get anxious here...it's only 3 days before the judging deadline and there's been no news...what's going on?

Yeah, the judging deadline is tomorrow.

Have any of the judges recieved files?

Yeah, the judging deadline is tomorrow.

Have any of the judges recieved files?

Nope. Not I.

I assume all deadlines are postponed until Nick has a chance to send us the material. I would urge all competitors to be patient and NOT post their work until Nick has done so and the judges have made their decision. As I understand it, Nick is haveing computer issues and has been inactive because of it. Hopefully, there will be an e-mail sent out when he returns and we'll return to our post as judges at that point.

Very annoying.

How long will we have to judge them? I want to give each submission a good fifteen minutes of my time, and with multiple AP courses, this may not be possible outside of Thanksgiving Break.
