Eine Schweines Nachtmusik

Recommended Posts

This was a assignment from a theory teacher on the use of sets. I also quote Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik in the B part of the piece.
Not really my style, but it was very enjoyable to write out and have fun.
It is incredibly hard to play because it doesn't really fit the average piano players hands.

What a chilling and humorous piece that is! And I love your use of set since it is not artificial for me. Rather it creates the funny character of the piece with the seemingly "wrong" notes. Great use of the sets!

It is very enjoyable! I hope I can try to compose like this!

Not only it is hard to play the notes, but also is it hard to play crisply and humorously with those large notes.

Is this just an assignment? Then your composition will be even better than this!

P.S. Just see that you have been composing a symphony, and the opening of the second movement is really promising. I must listen to it later.

Thanks Henry,

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Sets were incredibly fun to use because I didn't really have to think of the old theory rules. The old rules tend to hold me back, but I figure it's best to learn how to compose the "right" way before I turn to my own creativity.

It's incredibly difficult to play - I've been playing for roughly 12 years now and this poses interesting technical challenges. I didn't really write it at the piano, but rather at the computer. I've found that it's definitely not the best way to compose.

The Symphony is in a more classical style, but I do hope you enjoy it.

Thanks,
Patrick

I had to write with pitch sets as a composition exercise at one point too. I called it, "Count Dracula's Evil Rectal Thermometer". God... there were even lyrics. Cringe lol

Even though it wasn't my style (and still isn't), I still saw it as advantageous to write in that way. I think of it as an effect of some sort that I can use, and now you have that in your back pocket if you ever want your music to be molded that way.

Curious on the whole tone section? Caught me off guard, but I still think it flowed really well and didn't feel out of place. Great work!
