SATB Aanlysis

Going to put this one into SATB, but I'd like to use different harmonies for the verses and chorus. Any ideas?

For me you can use stabler harmony for verses and sharper sounds in chorus just like what you did in bar 1 with the E natural, probably good with an augmented chord Ab+. B.2 can be harmonized with Db7 while b.11 with Fm.

Hi. First of all don't take my words literally, of course, do what you want. As far as I know, in 4 part writing, or generally speaking, since tonality became common, the fourth is a consonance i

I thought that fourths were allowed in the upper voices, not between bass and tenor.

Hi @GospelPiano12, Actually I don't think this is a simple SATB! There are many non harmonic notes, add notes and unusual chord progression in it! All I say may not be applicable here, since

I agree. I was thinking of using augmented triads for the chorus, and 7ths on the verse. And I added some IV/V chords to the verse. I'd like to learn some more passing chords between a IV and ii chord. I always use a IV-VI64-ii.

Well, really it would be a IV- V43/ii-ii

This is a very smooth progression with the bassline moving in Db-C-Bb. An upper voice can move in Bb-C-Db with a ii6 chord substituting the IV chord, the V43/ii can be a vii65/ii (actually just substitute the F with a Gb) if you want a more dissonant sound. Or conversely the bassline moves on Bb-C-Db.

Is this good? I'd like some more distinction between the harmonies on the verse and chors

Hi @GospelPiano12,

I find it good and especially enjoy the chromatic passing tones. I really hope you can add more of that! It will add much colour and motion for the piece especially as a spiritual.

Just beware of the tied notes!

Are there any places you see that could benefit from more of those passing tones?

Having a bit of trouble notating this one

Hey @GospelPiano12,

The "to" in first line is Eb.

The "that's" in line 3 is Eb

The following lines I heard:

G F Eb D G F Eb D G Bb Bb

Eb G Bb Bb Eb C C C-Bb

Eb G Bb Bb Eb C C C-Bb

G Bb Bb Eb C C C Bb G-F Eb

Eb G F Eb Eb G F Eb Eb-F F Eb D Eb

The repeated lines I don't mark them.

Finally got a chance to use Aural Skills in real life. Wrote this whole away from home, so no piano to play it on first. That's the melody - anyone have any harmony suggestions? I'm going to go back in and add some echo parts too.

Hi @GospelPiano12,

Just brainstorming, e.g. the first bar can be a I-IV64-I progression, b.5 can be g minor, b.6 c minor!

I might try these...lmk what you think.

I think I'll need to adjust my voicing on my C7 chord

Not an analysis, but I'd like to experiment with writing something more vocal - how would my harmonies look with something like this?

I'm thinking mainly 3rds, but some 6ths would be nice between the soprano and alto.

For me is b.8 really this syncopated in the soprano part? For me the "Har" syllable should be a downbeat in the next bar. In the "fruit" in b.5 it's the same as it should be on downbeat of b.6 and last for 9 quaver beats.

Not sure, I can see that, but then b.8 would need to be adjusted and I'm not sure how. Unless I make that previous word "time" ties into the next bar.

Would this work better?
