Improv in D

Recommended Posts

An improv based on a 2 bar theme I created to demonstrate how to create a modulating period in a lesson plan I'm working on with Aaron.

It's a first run so very raw and noisy. Influenced by mozarts piano sonata in D I think because of the repetition of the theme in ii.

There seems to be some kind of problem with your mp3 - for me, it just cuts off after around 2:17.

Hi, Peter

It should be over 3 minutes. I just listened to it again. It's raw AF. Not sure I should have shared it. I improvise to look for ideas and try out new sounds and textures. Hopefully it will have uploaded properly this time.

Audio seems fine now. As a side note, I personally like to update the original post with the mp3, because sometimes I listen to someone's music and then realize the revised or corrected version is way down the list of posts. I know it's only the third post in this case, but it just makes it easier for the listener to find your music.

Cool little improv you have here. I'm guessing you posted this to show other members ways to develop a theme? I know you said "creating a modulating period", but I'm a little unsure what advice or critique you're looking for otherwise.

I do like hearing improvisations, and mistakes are no matter.

nah always share them.

Who cares about mistakes. For some reason I get a more intimate listen when I hear them, especially in an improv. I like the way you develop that original theme, and this is a good lesson for anyone interested in taking 2 bars and running with it.

Cool piece, thanks for sharing this 🙂

Do you have any plans for further expansion with it?

No I'm going to review this but find the audio melts away! Oh it's in a new reply here LoL.

This is a very nice march! Really spirited here! I love the form is more like a rondeau when the opening march is very recognizable and you go through different keys in different sentences. This is real Mozartian here.

Those lovely birds really add great flavour to the recording as well! That's a natural sound effect haha!

Very nice improvisation! I always admire you on that and your ability to memorize the themes while improvising on it and you don't get lost! It's easy to get lost during an improvisation when it's filled with meaningless scales and appreggios and useless diminished 7th chords, but all things happening here signifies a clear minded improviser.

Thanks for sharing Darren!

Thank you, Henry and Vince

I'm helping Aaron. My idea was to ask him to create 5 x 2 bar themes and from there create a modulating period. I chose the third theme although the other themes are OK.

I'm going to compose along side him step by step.

I improvised on the theme again today. I don't know if it's of interest. Might be interesting to hear my second run and how it has evolved. If I allow myself to keep going it'll be composed but I'm trying to go in step with Aaron so I'm being patient.
