Piano quartet No. 1

Featured Replies

My first quartet, for violin, viola, cello, and piano. I've grown really fond of this piece especially the last movement. Strangely, I seem to struggle a bit in sonata forms, perhaps I get too carried away in the development section. Please give your opinions!

I. Sonata form - g minor

II. Ternary Form (B section only cello+piano) - g major

III. Ternary form - c minor

IV. Rondo - g minor

Hi @Rômulo Mello,

I think it!s one of your style to use lots of imitations which I love and is especially apt to chamber music!

For the 1st movement I like the energy and the early romantic aura. I think the transition is a bit too long in b.40 but the modulation to C major is quite surprising. B.98 arpeggio is quite scary but ai think it’s the fault of MuseScore! I am not quite sure where is the beginning of the development since there’s no clear cadence of the ending of the exposition! 😝

I think it works well in terms of key changing and pulse, but the themes from the exposition for me is quite unrecognisable here! Why is it strange to struggle in sonata forms? I think it’s not easy to master it!

For the 2nd  movement I really love the crawling accompaniment of the piano in the 2nd movement. But the fast passage in b.98 for me is quite unfitting for the style here as it’s more pop and too virtuosic in my opinion, though it can be subjective.

I like the Scherzo proper in the 3rd movement but I like less for the trio.

I love the fire in 4th movement. It reminds me a Brahmsian finale. What is the intention for the dissonance in the passage starting from b.32? The first contrasting episode is for me a bit too quiet but the contrast is apt. The contrast of the b.112 for me is a little bit too big but I love the development later when you introduce that fluid sextuplets accompaniment! For the last episode I think it can be extended to have a more definite feeling of ending!

Overall it’s a really good try on chamber music! Nice job and it must be hard to compose a multi movement work haha.
