The Beauty of Yunnan

Guzheng

I'm not sure where to get one, but I've played one before. The technique is interesting... one hand plucks the strings, the other hand can be used to change the tension on the other side of the bridges - hence vibrato and even large pitch bends (I've heard some that go well beyond a whole step) are possible.

So from what you've said I'm guessing its the predecessor to the Japanese Koto...

I was lucky enough to play one last week.. so much fun :D

Thanks young brother for sharing this descendant of the chinese classical music ! It's nice to see that sometimes there isn't only cheap american-like music in China, India and Japan which where the roots of musical traditions since millenium (well not Japan of course) !!

Hey Zhou, welcome to YC :o

Speaking of Yunnan, my mother was born there, and personally, I very much love that place. The houses are all on water, well for the most part. And those little traditional tunes just always stunned me. It was good that you brought this up, allows me to look back at China. Say, have you heard of Sai Ma? (English: Horse Racing) it's a great piece, with the Erhu solo. I love it. Zhou, thanks for sharing this wonderful piece, hope to hear more of YOUR pieces in the near future. :sadtears:
