Turning to a New Page

It has finally happened. I've reached a point where I'm good enough at mixing that I had to go back and delete all my uploads to the instanets and replace them with better-quality versions of themselves. I owe this to the fact that I've developed a couple of programs that process sound files, tweaking the loudnesses of sine wave partials and repositioning these sine waves in stereo space to make for clarity and balance. I also downloaded a program that fixes instrument mistuning. Mistuning is a near-universal fact in music, with almost all instruments possessing small or even highly noticeable deviations from proper 12-tone equal temperament. The program I downloaded fixes this issue. Taken together, these three factors--loudness tweaking, respositioning sounds in stereo space, and fixing mistuning--have taken the quality of my music to a substantially higher level (I'm particularly pleased with the tweaking of sine wave positions in stereo space, as the idea behind it is highly original and yields interesting, results; for example, instruments can frequently be heard moving or teleporting across the stereo field in an effort to find their ideal positions).

I have revised the program's workings considerably, to much improved effect. Here, have a fugue of sorts, a canon, and a miscellaneous piece.

I fixed a major issue in the workings of the program. Now, the continuity of the transitions has been more or less perfected, and the sound quality is, as a result, vastly improved. I think, at this point, it sounds about as polished as it needs to be. I have one other idea floating around in my head, but I'm not sure I'm going to pursue it. Maybe, maybe not.

There, I've done it. I fixed the last issue, which was stereo wobble. Now the right and left ear are always balanced, to what I think is very pleasing effect. Here are some samples. Be sure to put on your headphones to enjoy the fruits of my labor.

I just realized that I have the option to dial the consonance levels all the way up. The remixes are coming out substantially better now. Below are three compositions processed by the program I designed.

Further improved the program by taking into account loudness masking and the fact that the panning of low frequencies cannot be distinguished (these are now panned dead center). Some results may be heard below.

One of the last problems was that, while each stucture of panning was more or less optimal, the transitions between them were sometimes not. Sometimes, instruments seemed to jump about at random. I have therefore changed the logic behind this. Formerly, the program would flip optimally constructed "panning constellations" (partials with their orientations in stereo space) so that transitions would be maximally smooth. Instead now, they're connected to each other based on structural similarity, with the result that clusters of partials move around in a much more logical and coherent fashion.

A vast improvement. Formerly, below a certain frequency, partials were suddenly restricted to being panned hard center. Now there is a smooth transition rather than a hard cutoff, leading to a much smoother effect.

Now that I have more or less perfected the processing of adjusting panning, I have turned my attention to adjusting the loudnesses of sound partials. This second aspect of the program is already finished, I think. Here are some results.
