James QZ
First of all, does anyone know this instrument? It's a traditional Chinese instrument. My question is, how is the music written for this instrument? Like, how are the notations being displayed? In tabs? Thanks.
Marius
As far as I've seen, you write notes on a staff just like for the violin. TAB would be awkward since the Erhu only has 2 strings.
CaltechViolist
Most modern-day performers on the erhu read Western notation.
Will Kirk
I've heard it called a horse fiddle before, very interesting instrument
minhman13
to extend this a little bit. How exactly do you notate for eastern music. What scale do they use to be more specific.
James QZ
Interesting... so, does anyone of you have any examples? like an image?
Mike
Google, Google Images, Wikipedia etc. There's even an audio sample on the Wikipedia page. I'll leave you to locate that one for yourself. :P Quite a beautiful sound, all in all. Probably instantly recognisable and evocative if you've seen any samurai type films.
