String Harmonics Notation

Featured Replies

I use Sibelius 3. I am getting very frustrated with some notation problems. Can anyone please tell me how I notate artificial harmonics for string instruments (in this case a violin). When notating harmonics you have the the hard pressed (fundamental) note marked with a full notehead, and the placement of the fourth finger is an empty diamond head. The problem is, is that both of these noteheads have to be on the same stem, how can I get this done?

Any help or advice will very much be appreciated

Okay I just tried it, it only takes a second. Goto the "Window" menu, then click properties. Now, click on your staff normally for the normal notehead. DONT CLICK ANYWHERE ELSE, levae it selected. Now goto the properties window, click the "notes" tab, and where it says 0 and has a picture of the normal notehead, click the arrow next to it. Click either number "2" or number "6", it depends what you want (they are both diamond shaped) and then click on the same stem as you have your normal notehaed.

Oh yeah, thats how you do drum notation as well.

No sorry, this way isn't how it works properly, but thanks for trying. The notes that use harmonics are artificial, and therefore require two note heads, one of them being a diamond. And the note is a fotted minum, and the note with the harmonic shouldn't be dotted. Oh well.

Thank you for giving it a shot though

Make sure you have the properties window up. If not, go to 'Window' at the top, and click on 'Properties'. A window with many tabs should pop up. Click on 'Notes'. Now, click on the note you want to change and select, from the Notes window, which notehead you want from the drop down box. The note should change to what you select.

P.S. If you were clicking on the note's stem, don't do that. Click on each actual notehead you want to change.
