the words!?

Featured Replies

Hello new to this but I am having real trouble wording a vocal composition I'm working on! I am setting the text of Psalm 7 but the moment that is causing the most trouble is where each part (SATB) enters slightly after the last but with the same words are there any rules relating to how you set a text or can I have different parts all saying different words? (I haven't written a vocal composition before so any help would be greatly appreciated!) thanks Bean x

The rules are yours to create... though... acoustically speaking you should avoid having certain intervals with differents phonems at the same time for it mess up the sound (unless it's what you want of course). But... well... it's a bit complex stuff... Maybe I could say... avoid very close vowels on more dissonnant intervals (by close I mean : pAY and fAt... or mOOse and spOON). And avoid these close vowels in very small intervals changes (like a semi-ton) for it might not be heard accuratly and distinctively... unless it's what you seek... of course...

Except that... follow the voices ranges... avoid too large steps for one voice... but then again... it varies in fonction of the context ! Have fun after checking all these ! eheh
