A Tale Of Two Kingdoms (computer game music), Epic...

Featured Replies

Okie.

I don't think I've shared this with you :P

From a computer game (adventure) to be found at A Tale of Two Kingdoms

Take a listen:

I find it quite fascinating and fantastic I have to admit, one of my favourite tracks! :) But then again it's my work so I can't really comment on it (but just did. hihi)

Nikolas

I've listened to this one before. I find it rather good. :P

What's the story insofar as structure and/or form? Is it more or less a linear progression dictated by storyline or on-screen action, or is there something lurking beneath the surface? I'm awful at discerning structures...

Some nice vocal effects in there. I'm going to assume you don't own your own chorus, so was this the work of EWQL Symphonic Choirs, by any chance?

  • Author

Thanks mike,

The choirs are the EWQL SC of course. I don't have locked in my bassement any choir members :) The orchestra is also EWAL Gold (not xp pro, btw).

The form was dictated by the intro movie more or less but I tried my best to give it a normal form...

Mainly the whole idea is the bass notes in the tubas, trombones and bass strings, in the "middle section" (right after the percussion start hitting), which is a 12 note series actually :o. Based on that I made normal 3 note chords, minor and major ones. And on that I based the begining and ending...

As far as structure though, I'd say that it is following the intro video (Which btw is also online if one searches a little :P Just that I feel that the music is a tad too much for the video...) That's all

Cheers, Mike

ah, Nikolas, Nikolas, Nikolas....

I hate to do this to you, but....

I actually liked this :)

For game music (I'm not a great fan of most game music) it was wonderfully rich and dense.

I particularly liked the dense harmony and the polychords.

There's something about game music I find unsatisfying, generally. It's as though it's cinematic, yet "missing something". I understand that it's probably an inherant requirement of the genre. Happily, I didn't get that impression from your piece.

If you were to make me happy (and of course, that SHOULD be your prime goal in life :P) I'd love to hear something of yours that is halfway between this and your string quartet.

haha!

Glad I made you like at last a track of mine :o yay! Succes! yay!

Okie...

Let's see now...

Game music is indeed treated (by composers and audience alike), at a more superfecial level than film music, which itself is treated as inferior to concert music. :-/ It just happens...

I treat game music with the utter respect, since I did grow with compure games at my side... :P I do try and give the best of me there in that genre (plus I would love to make a HUGE career out of computer games music, (mentioning HUGE, since I'm already making money out of it)).

But I'll try to give in to your request and attempt something a bit more... difficult maybe, as a game music... I'll make a new thread... :)

I've really gotten into some game music, actually.

not to listen to it alone without the context of teh game, but been amazed at how beautiful some of it is.

For example, in World of Warcraft, there's an area called Teldrassil, and the music is absolutely heart wrenchingly beautiful. there was this really emotional quest there, to save the soul of a forest elemental creature.. and at the end, when you do, the music breaks out with the chorus and the full orchestra, and I was sitting there sobbing...

And when I played Final Fantasy XI, I remember coming "home" after a few weeks of questing in distant areas, and just hearing the music of my "home town" was enough to bring tears to my eyes.

So not all game music is heart pounding action music. Which is nice. I like FEELING something when I play a game. And any game that can make me cry has a darned good soundtrack.

Despite your music normally filling me with terror and bewilderment (:w00t:), I found this incredibly listenable, and I really really enjoyed it. I then downloaded the trailer, and found that the music fitted the story beautifully. I am now going to check out this other post of yours :D

This is awesome, some of the best game music I've heard on this site.:D My sister (who knows nothing of music) thought I was listening to my Lord of the Rings soundtrack, so that has got to count for something:P (although you may not like that...)

One thing I didn't like was the high pitched percussion that starts around 1:50. It is a nice effect, but it gets rather annoying for the ears after a while!:w00t:

But anyway, this is awesome, I can't wait to hear more!:)

Bob, you're talking about the triangle probably, yes it could get annoying, I should bring it down a little. Other than that thanks mate :D Yes I don't really mind someone compairing my music to LOTR music :) Not now, at least :w00t:

Mark, cheers mate;)

I have started a new thread right bellow this one, go to check it out if you please. It's called "Thale Cres Suite"

That settles it. I'm saving up for EWQ. Man, I love this track! I can do so much with loops, but this is on a whole different level.

Yes, very LOTRish, indeed. I needn't say it's excellent. I listened to it. And, while the music created epic imagery, I rushed to watch the trailer and was very disappointed. Just some background art and text. Argh...

Yeah, I watched the video too. Seems a bit of a let down. Awesome music but with nothing happening behind it:(. I supposed it helped me imagine the battles it described...

  • Author

Yup, the video is nothing special, although I do follow with the music exactly the txt (at least :P). I would love to have an awesmoe video to score and so on, but this kind of game (adventure) does not lend itself for such scoring really...

Either way I'm very pleased with the music :D hihi Cheers guys for liking it :)

Freaking awesome, not much else I can say about this one. Other then it sounds more suited for a movie then a videogame.

Hi !

Your music is really really GREAT !

I love it very much. It touched me a lot.

In how many time have you made it ? Since how many time are you composing ?

Best moments for me :

0:32 : something happening

0:43 : wonderfull voices, very peacefull

1:10 : best moment for me : could you share that part of the score ? This sound is great

It remember me Lord of the ring a little.

3:33 : remember me Spiderman, don't you ?

At the end, I would have appreciated to have the begining theme with variation maybe. (Just personal taste) The end is not really a "end".

I love the action of all the track.

The sound is very good too, please, tell us what software you are using.

I understand what you mean when you say it is fascinating. I feel the same sometime for my music.

Nothing is more beautifull to express perfectly a feeling, and this can be done with music ! When we success to do it, it is heaven !

You can be proud of your track !

Thanks for sharing. I will listen it very often. It is one of the best music published here.

Thank you,

Max

PS : sorry for my bad english

If I understand correctly. It took around 100 hours (yes I'm THAT slow at times) to write, orchestrate, copy to Finale, tranfer and produce in Cubase, mix and rework and master...

I composer since around 10 or maybe earlier probably. I'm 30 now.

I can't share the score, as it's messy. But at 1:10 it's just the timpani + bas drum (2 layers), Contrabass and Violoncello hitting at the bass, and the low notes are bassoon, contrabassoon, trombone, tuba, and contrabass (again. Yes I cheated!)

3:33: Spiderman? I don't know which movie of the 3, but I don't have any soundtrack of spiderman, and have not yet seen No.3. could very well be though, as it is kinda clich

Thanks mate ;)

No problem man, your music makes mine sound like crap. From what I understand you actually compose for a living, I am interested in that very same field. Any tips you can give me?

  • Author

Hmmm... not sure what tips exactly you want. (honestly, I can guess but...).

Let's see...

1. Don't go out in public forums proclaiming your music sounds like crap! why would anyone hire you to produce crap music?

2. Be precise in what you want. "any tips", is soooo general that I wouldn't know where to start and where to end. Who are you, what exactly you want to do (music, is not valid, what music, what level, what kind, what country, eveything counts), what can you do, and so on.

3. I'm not being a smartass, honestly, I'm trying to help. I've seen SO many ads wanting jobs for musicians, which lack the very basics (for example, posting that you're a composer looking for a job, but don't have any links to your music. Who would care enough to check you out really? and so on)...

4. A while back I made this thread exactly to asnwer your type of question. I hope it helps: How to make it... - CGEmpire

It is a tutorial of sorts, with advice, general and more precise on getting into the music industry.

5. Never expect a top 10 list of advices on what to do to enter the music business. Lists like these go up to No. 5. :P

(PS. your music on soundclick is not bad at all! why would it be crap? ;) Don't ever say your music is crap please!)

Sorry, I have a tendency to be over critical of my own work and will usually nit pick on the smallest details. When I am not being overly critical though, I do think my music is decent (it's actually kind of good if I take in to account that I have only been composing for about three months now and have absolutely no formal musical training). Anyway, I am sorry for not being specific enough when seeking your advice, I was looking for tips on how to break into the videogame industry and what I should do now (I am 15) to prepare myself.

Wonderful Work, Nick... really well done!
