What's the goal of music?

Recommended Posts

Personally, I like vagueness, mystery and ambiguity most of all. Music and language are among the universals; one could interpret them differently - this is freedom that could result in anything and lead to everywhere. Music has an infinite set of goals. The goal (every kind of goal) is the listener (every kind of listener). The goal appears as a result of the listener's perception and interpretation - the music leads the listener to a certain condition. Music has no goal when there is no listener.

Karmen, how would you interpret "CAT" differently than me?

I want to answer this question with other questions:

What is the meaning of Arts in general? What is the goal of life? What is the meaning of existence?

Not Karmen, but Kamen.

It could be interpreted as something that makes a sound similar to the pronounciation of that word; as an abbreviation; as double tripod or as nine-tail whip (because it could mean those things, as well, according to the dictionary), etc. An interpretation as the animal, for example, is not absolute, since there are different kinds of cats; also, tiger and lion are cats as well (they belong to the cats family). The word represents the abstraction, the idea for cat, which is unchangeable and general, but in different people the word could eventually trigger different feelings, memories, associations which evolve and connect in one's mind. I could also interpret the word metaphorically. So do you. For example, a person with bad temper, which again could mean different things to different people. And by the way, two years ago I wrote such a story - it seems like an ordinary story, although I mean something entirely different and it consists of connected metaphores.

:P GREAT! Another quasi-philosophical response.

Why does everyone try to get so 'profound' ...

And, re: language v music. Sure there's words and phrases that can be interpreted differently. BUT, in music there is no possible way to devise a credible semiotic system. It's been tried, but to no avail.

The sole purpose of language is to convey specific meanings. Music and language simply can't be compared in this way.

BAH!

I think the major goals of music are:

1. To bring harmony and peace between peoples.

2. To help people in their times of sorrow and pain with things like hope and joy.

3. To advance people’s spirituality.

4. To bring smiles to people’s faces.

5. To bring man closer to the Creator.

6. To create a positive energy in the world.

7. To elevate the existence of humanity from the ordinary to the extraordinary.

I read in a book written by Copland. He says when a composer composes, he doesn't give listeners emotion, he gives the listeners a part of himself.

And I agree.. :)

Hi !

I do totally agree with you.

The question is an important question, and it is not just a music question. It is a question about art and about why artists makes arts.

For me, it is an evidence that artist has no choice but to create. Do you really think that we have a choice ?

Hearing music all time in our head is not a choice.

It is an expression of our feelings, emotions, thoughts, an expression of beeing human. And if we have the chance to be able to transform it in music, we should do it and share it.

Each composition is a part of what we really are.
