Hymn

This submission was an exercise in restraint and simplicity, meant to express a humble sense of peace and solemnity.

Great - I really like this hymn, as you know.

The added repetition works, and does not become monotonous, as the orchestration adds interest each time (the extra organ stops did work well).

Lovely piece - restraint is rare to see sometimes, amongst young composers.

Paul, I re-attached it. Sometimes my files show up with that bizarre "codec" message. I don't know why. Maybe someone could figure that out, but I think it has something to do with the program I use. This should work (I reposted it within my first message on this thread). Cheers.

I liked it up until the final verse - I would have preferred things to be slightly more dramatic at that point, the trumpet stop just sounded unnecessary since there did not appear to be a new harmony or added ornamentation underneath. You did however say it was supposed to be an exercise in restraint, which is really quite challenging sometimes. I also don't have the text, so have no idea how restrained the setting should be, or whether a florid final verse would be appropriate.

Well done though. Writing a chorale-style hymn with moving internal parts and succesfully avoiding weird jarrs is itself a challenge.
