Ballad - Secret in the Forest

Featured Replies

On the multi-user domain (MUD) I play on, I play a skald who writes music about her life experiences. The subject of this ballad is her love with a druid who she must secretly meet in the forest.

Thank you so much for your interest.

Again, the .MID doesn't sound quite like either finale's file or the mp3, but I really don't know how to work with .MID files. I've attached the lyrics in text.

I liked this song a lot. Nice folkish sound.

The finale post works but requires a finale product 2007.

I would suggest finding someway to keep the flute from splitting into two parts. Instead maybe put one of the lines into the harp part. Add dynamic and phrase markings. Your missing a staccato in the flute in measure 47. Nice text to work with. Nice setting. I know the harp sound is what you want, but could more be done if a piano was used, not to mention it is a much more commonly played instrument.

Anyways, nice work.

Thank you so much for your comments.

You're right, of course, the flute notation is a bit odd. I hack away at this mostly by ear, so I'll work on separating it for a little easier reading.

The staccato at measure 47 was left out intentionally to work better with the lyric and keep that phrase more fluid.

Hrm..piano..that means bass clef..ack....I'm primarily a vocalist..I'll work on a rewrite with piano accompaniment.

Again, thanks so much for your comments.

I'm so loving this.

I suck at criticisms, but - if it's not too impertinent - would you let me have a shot at recording it? I'm a harpist and a singer who can work a little bit with a pan flute, and I've got a multi-tracking program handy...

Please?

Tristitiae!

I'm sorry for the long delay, but many things were going on.

I've split the flute parts, (I think way too much like a soprano) made a few alterations, and in fact, voiced the flutes as pan flutes. I would be very excited to hear your recording. :musicwhistle:

I would appreciate further critiquing, not so much in my notation abilities, but in the sound that can be achieved.

This is a nice piece. I like fantasy music.

C'mon guys... I can't listen to balad.. MIDI is a good solution for any platfourm.. Sibelius is a too fancey thing for me..

Here ya go, green_minstrey

This is the updated MID after alterations and dynamics. Lyrics are posted above with the old MID file.

OMG OMG

This would have had me weeping, except for those cough*extremely annoying*cough staccato notes. I hate those. Otherwise it's PERFECT.

Yes, I agree, they do sound more harsh replicated here than they sound in my head. I'm extremely new putting things from my head onto "paper". Do you have a better suggestion for notating the hesitation I feel belong in those three spots?

hesitation? a breath mark on non-wind instruments usually indicates space before the next note.

  • Author

Well, it's more hesitation than a breath in my head. The lyric at measures 7,15, and 39 asks a question, so it's more than a breath..at least to me..but, you're right, the staccato sucks..so how about I change the dotted quarter to a quarter, and slip an 1/8 rest behind it? That feels more like the question I meant it to be.
