Oboe Sonata First Movement

Featured Replies

So I was just wondering if some of you could give me a bit of feedback. I've realized some problems with this piece, but not all of them for sure. Here's what I have so far. :)

This piece was started a long time ago, and now I want to finish it. Be aware that I don't want to change the feel at all, but I do want to make this piece work better and flow more smoothly.

1. Second block chord in Measure 3 sounds bad.

2. Measures 11-14 need reworked chords.

3. Measure 25 - change into block chords is too sudden?

4. Measure 41 - the piano melody is not obvious.

5. Measure 47-48 - the grace note is just.. bad.

Any input on how to fix some of these? Any more you find? thanks!

I like it - definitely worth finishing. On GPO it has a good sound. On 1. and 2., the harmony is unusual in places but this only adds to its charm. On 3. I don't see a problem. The last two points depend a lot on what follows - you could double the piano melody - but it is there - tricky issue. What I do see in bar 47-48 is the G# in both parts which is problematic.

You could add a rit. in bar 15 and "a tempo" in bar 17 but it isn't bad the way it is.

Again, an interesting piece well worth finishing.

I feel that rhythmically the piece is uninteresting, although harmonically satisfactory. Unfortunately, though, I would be entirely unable to interpret and play the piece, given the unfunny unorthodox tempo specifications in conjunction with my lack of religious beliefs.

I don't think the chord in measure 3 is particularly out of place, although you could try D major or augmented. I'm not a composer, though, just a theorist.

Also, those oboe notes in measure 22 generally sound very strained on the oboe unless the player is exceptionally good.

Personally, I think you would probably accomplish more if you were to begin afresh with something new.

Or rewrite the melody.

OK.

Very true about the harmony. As far as the rhythm, what would you suggest for improvement?

I'm exceptionally good.

Thank for your input :P

Here's an updated version, with an ending.

Oboe SOnata No 1.MUS

Oboe SOnata No 1.MID

I think the updated version is quite good, very enjoyable to listen to. The problems you noted in your initial post all seem to have been resolved satisfactorily without altering the mood of the piece.

Thanks!

The piano part changes when the oboe comes in and its a little wierd and ummm the first of the oboe is wierd...nice piece though.:) goodjob.

there is practically no development making it unsubstantial.
ummm the first of the oboe is wierd

What? If you're going to leave comments, can you make them understandable please?
