Scherzo in Bb minor

Here is my attempt at a scherzo. Whatever that may mean. I did it in Bb minor because its a crazy key to begin with and it was a challenge to compose within. I'm hoping whomever of you listens to it enjoys it and drops a note on it.

Scherzo literally translated - Joke.

This piece seems much too serious to be a scherzo to me.

The piece had some nice spots though. I particularly liked the I, V, I, variation you did around 30 seconds. There were some other parts that I enjoyed as well.

Some things I didn't like. You skip frequently between a "classical" feel, and then right into some strange jazz chord. The reoccuring theme that enters at about 10 seconds felt a little odd to me.

You had some nice progressions in there though. I think your music could benifit greatly from some counterpoint. The entire piece I only hear two voices. They are either occuring at the same time, or one at a time which gives the piece a thin texture. I think the best part in this piece was the arpeggios at 1:20. You used some really nice chords in there, and that was the part that caught my attention the most.

The main suggestion I have, is the counterpoint. Study it. You won't believe how much it helps!

I think the piece fits the name fairly well. It's playfull, yet still serious. Not every scherzo has to be partially atonal, y'know. :thumbsup: When i listen to this, i hear Tchaikovsky, not necessarily the writing style, but the mood you create. That is a definite plus to me.

Hmmm..... I don't quite care much for atonal music either. Now about the title of the Piece to Quote Schumann referring to Chopin's Scherzos - "How is gravity to clothe itself if jest goes about in dark veils?" ........ I certainly think that settles it.

Well I thank all of you for commenting. So the question remains is it a scherzo? I would like to think it is, as it does containing a sense of serious joking if thats possible. I'm fairly sure I have heard some Chopin Scherzo's that were a bit more serious.

Now for the comment concerning counterpoint. It is a demon for me. I'm never sure how to incorporate it into my pieces. Some of the parts I deffinately wanted only one voice and a thin sound, and I've always found it difficult to write piano with counterpoint I consider decent. Any help is appreciated.

Chopin's Scherzi, though serious in nature, still had a certain feel to them. My final say on the name of this piece?
