Percussionists! - double sticking
I'd personally use example number 3: it just seems much more flowing and easier to read. Seeing 8ths with diddle markings just looks awkward to me.

Marching Percussion in Finale 2003
In 2007, you use the * key to get to a menu, with from there you press 6 (is the key for the diddle line). I'm assuming its the same in 2003. Check your percussion maps to see if they are messed up.

I agree with you. There was not enough planning done and with the Symphonic competition going at the same time, there wasn't a lot of entries.
