  1. This is an odd idea, but it does pose some interesting problems... So you would have the starting and ending notes and frequencies, and then only a list of frequencies for the remaining notes in a list below them, right? And then a person who puts them in order correctly hears the song and is let in. I hope i understand this correctly, because im thinking about using this to get my programming skills focused before the semester starts. One point however, your mathmatical equation, with only pluses and minuses, would not work as you intend it to work. I could easily switch any two numbers being added, or i could switch any two numbers being subtracted, and i would still get the desired 440. Maybe, instead of dealing with mathmatics, just have each user program a specific melodic fragment and then the user must input the missing pieces. You could also do this with chords. A user creates a chord (lets say, G4 B4 D5 F#5 A5, or G maj 9) and then the user inserts the notes in his chord.
  2. How does one write a subject line? Maybe instead i should ask, what are some common properties of good subject lines?
  3. Hey! I like the ideas for this song, and other than what Nightengale said i have one thing. The piccalo part needs to be brought out a lot more. The way i get the file in Finale 2006, you might as well dropped the whole line because it was just not audible. So yea, bring that out because it sounds awesome!
  4. Ahhh, the book you mentioned is one of many at the local university library! I love having family who go to college. Anyways, im trying fux again and im not trying piston's book ever again. If i have the money ill try derek's book, it looks very interesting!
  5. Thank You for all the ideas! I will try Fux once more but i may be wierd and actually like Jargan and Textbookish styles. Wordy and extensive are my preferences, and i like a modern feel as im not the BIGGEST fan of classical. Nice to listen to, not my favorite though
  6. I just cant stand the language... i need something a little more modern. I read through it, twice, plus practiced the material but i still just kinda hate the speech and context. Something up front would be nicer, looked at with a modern eye, i dont know
  7. Yea, just wondering what peoples opinions are... and i hated fux's book
  8. Hey, very nice piece! I love the piece overall, its great. Just a few minor things A few things i dont love: Abuse of the top of you score. They hardly play for the length. Also in the beginning you have a raw repitition of the main melody, you could put something over the top of it to introduce new material or just give it a refreshing sound. The beginning, it seemed to forceful and the dissonence was a bit much. Later the dissonence worked very well for you but not in the beginning.
  9. Very nice piece, and catchy. I wont burden you with specific theory or anything, since if the listener walks away with the tune in the back of their head, you have done a fantastic job. Its a nice 'chill' piece that sounds to me like rock meets elevator music, which is not a bad thing. Definatly on the right track, ill let someone else take care of any specific concerns
  10. Thanks, seems to be a general agreement on the video game origin of the piece. Yes, the parrallel 5ths are no longer forbidden but its written for a basic theory class so i have to follow proper part writing
  11. Thanks for the advice. Letehn, ill take your second idea sticking with the strings for my assignment and when i get around to it ill make a video game arrangement, possibly for full band with electric guitar
  12. It feels like im driving through the rain enjoying the sights, but you know the troubles of driving in bad weather. Every once and awhile you run into trouble and things pick up. Very nice piece
  13. So basically i have to write a song. Everything is allowed, including parrallel 5ths but what is ussually forbidden should be saved for when its when its needed. String_Ensemble_1.MID
  14. Awesome song! yea, we get to play it in our wind ensemble and one of the fathers is a professional pianist so he will be playing that part. Anyway, im out
  15. The amount of boards is a great set. It makes sense to distinguish the major works from the minor and then to separate those further. Without doing so people would have no idea what they might be listening to when they go to review. Maybe a more efficient 'View New Post' system if possible or if you could separate the new posts from the old directly in a sub forum with a space. The system is set it just needs tweaking.
  16. Alfred Reed... may he rest in piece Russian Chirstmas Music is concidered one of his best pieces, check it out but you may want to leave yourself the 15 minutes to listen to it
  17. And i am you antagonist. I, being a saxophone player, am conditioned to hate brass, especially trumpets. PS, The woodwinds have allied with the Percussion for an invasion of the brass section. Be glad most band rooms are ground floor. Anyways, try and find a recording to 'Aria' for Eb alto saxophone, its a very popular tune and the annoying part is the wide interpretation people have with the piece. Once a judge told me i should have decresendo'd when the part called for a massive cresendo, AND HE WAS SERIOUS!
  18. Hey, awesome piece, very free flowing. Congrats! Song01duet.MID
  19. Thats not what i mean... What im saying is that you can sit down and play any solo over it, and improv solo and it works well. From Bebop to classic jazz - you can play just about anything over the top.
  20. Omg, Cherokee i though was awesome if you implaneted a nice flowing sax solo on top of it. It just had that potential - you could easily just sing some random line over the top and it flowed! I love it
  21. Hey, i listened to your glen miller arrangement and i must say it is very awesome once you look beyond midi limitations and the shattered ear drums they cause. Very nice, very nice, very nice... and do tell which isnt yours, i want to see if i can tell!
  22. What am i missing? Im very interested to hear...
  23. Good book, but no book can replace a piece blowing up in your face. Now tell me, is a majority of modern wind ensemble and concert band pieces composed in a homophonic fashion, with chords in the background and a main melodic line... possibly with a secondary counterpoint line if your lucky =)? Or am i just missing something
  24. Originality is good most definatly. Its that extra push that sets you apart. Those like quirks make music fun and ultimatly someone will look at your music, adapt your style with changes. Then someone will do the same to their music. Originality is the force behind musical revolutions, and to some people that isnt important, but to me it feels great to do something daring that could be a brick in building a new style. (even though i have yet to do anything remotly that great, but im trying!). It doesnt matter if your for the big picture or love the nit-picky details, we need something that is fresh and exciting - like a bebop song in the middle of a classical playlist =)
  25. Very Very Nice, and it wasnt bad on the ears either. At times you could have seemlessly moved the piece into 'American in Paris' by Gershwin. A very nice piece!
