"Sonata for Trumpet" - Piano and Trumpet

Featured Replies

Hello, this is my first time here at Young Composers and I hope to make a good impression on everyone while I get used to the ways of this message board. I have been composing and arrangeing music for a little over a year now. I have had no formal instruction on composition; all of what I know is what I have either figured out or have read in the past. I hope to learn much from people's comments.

Anyway, on with my composition...

This is what I consider my first "True" composition. I have experimented with things in the past that didn't turn out so well, but I consider this my first "success." I'm not sure whether I can call it a sonata or not because I am not to familiar with what qualifies as a sonata. This is arranged for piano with solo trumpet. I picked trumpet because that is the instrument that I play and I just want to write something for it I guess. It is Baroque inspired but I'm not sure that it is a 100% baroque piece. One thing that I do regret is that my sound samples are not the greatest, so the trumpet doesn't sound like the trumpet I had in my head, but that aside I hope to get a lot of constructive criticism. Thank you for your time!

I liked it a lot. The only thing that bothered me was the repeated 16th note closed voicing chords in the bass. They got kind of annoying, but that's my only criticism:).

I agree the bass is a little annoying. I like the part before the entrance of the Trp., and I like the trumpet part. I play trp. also, for two years, going for 3 this september. Some parts are difficult not all though. Some parts sound like Mozart (probably why I like it). Sudden Rit. and and some chords are a little off. Tounging High notes is a little hard measure 118 is really hard as well as 128. I like the ending. overall, some parts are unplayable, and you need to change some notes to make sense in the piece, and to sound right. yeah, I don't think its bad, but it needs work to be playable. I know it is summer, but this is some advise pro. composers have given me and a publisher (not me) "Have your band play it to see if it is playable" or "a group" or "a soloist" in this case "A soloist". Check if that trumpet plaer you ask can play it.

Otherwise Good job. :D

This is quite an enjoyable piece. I like the contrast between the opening theme and the chromatic second theme. The parallel motion in beats 3,4 of measures 7 and 54 is perhaps not in keeping with the overall harmonic style of the piece.

I have attached some suggested changes - they are fairly simple ideas to gain variety (mainly the repeated 16th chords) - nothing spectacular. I hope you find them useful.

I see. Thank you very much for your comments!

@RM Clarinetist: I can agree, at some parts it may not make sense. Idea were running low at the time and I was excited to finish the piece. I disagree with your comment on playability though. All notes are in range for a professional trumpet player and none of the rhythms are to complicated to play. If you could elaborate more on why you think it is not playable it would be appreciated. Thank you for your comment!

@Euler: I like the changes. Those parts were the last sections I had to complete the composition because I couldn't think of anything to fit in there but I like what you did there. Thank You!

Well, it also depends what you were aming for. All those 16th note arpeggios are hard, and the really high notes, that is unplayable, College players cannot play that, the only person I know who would, is Louis Armstrong.
